Names are interesting in The Reluctant Fundamentalist: Am/Erica; Changes/Changez; Underwood Samson (of the myth, but also Uncle Sam / US); Jean-Bautista, John the Baptist. Compared to the book, the film was much more detailed and informative when you look at the big picture. In this assignment, I am going to compare the novel and the adapted movie version of «The Reluctant Fundamentalist». I just finished reading this book (I was intrigued by the fact that the movie adaptation was doing well at festivals and I've been trying to hunt down a literary voice for Pakistani-Americans). When he talks to the journalist he makes an unexpected reference to CSI Miami, something that was in a way unexpected but also reassuring in the context of kidnapping, bombing and revolutionary ideas. The movie had much more detailed content, which made it easier to catch up with the characters and their roles, but also more difficult – because the ending was much more confusing due to the character-change and all of the new facts and details.
Like the Janissaries often mentioned in the text, Changez feels he has betrayed his roots and become a servant to a foreign master: here, American capitalism. I was not certain where I belonged – in New York, in Lahore, in both, in neither…" (148). Comparison: In this blog post I will compare the plot, character descriptions, relationships, focus and message in the film vs the book named The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The main noticeable difference would be Changez. But I'm curious to know how other people felt about it. But more intriguing, and arguably more impressive, is the fact that Changez is a sympathetic figure in spite of some objectionable opinions – he admits, for example, to being "remarkably pleased" by 9/11. Reviews at the time used the word "extremism" over and over again when describing The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which stars Riz Ahmed as a Pakistani professor targeted by the C. I. The question "who is to be blamed" wafts uneasily through the entire tapestry of Changez's tale. But if that were the case, it would do nothing to undermine its strength as a novel. One of the novel's notable achievements is the seamless manner in which ideology and emotion, politics and the personal are brought together into a vivid picture of an individual's globalised revolt. Pakistan's current Ambassador to the United States, Sherry Rehman, is a forceful example of the courage and thoughtfulness that has inspired many Pakistanis to meaningfully develop and strengthen Pakistan, particularly after 9/11. His colleague's delight of the Pakistani cuisine really endeared him to Changez; he had found "A kindred spirit" (38).

But that mystery evaporates as Changez emerges as an innocent and it's Bobby, reporter-turned-CIA operative, who makes a fatal blunder. In other words, my blinders were coming off, and I was dazzled and rendered immobile by the sudden broadening of my arc of vision. Changez came from a nation bountiful with Islamic fundamentals. As he wrote earlier this year in a piece for The Guardian: "I began to wonder if the power of the novel, if its distinctive feature among contemporary mass-storytelling forms, was rooted in the enormous degree of co-creation it requires on the part of its audience. Police disturb patrons at the Pak Tea House where Khan holds court. In the novel, he had cancer; in the film, Changez's said Erica was the reason for his death. So what, the state seems to be asserting, if the doctor helped kill the man who is responsible, directly and indirectly, for hundreds of Pakistani and other deaths? Was he, by working in Wall Street and indirectly financing the American military, waging a war against his own family and friends in Pakistan?
He complains, with breathtaking cynicism, of how India and America together sought to harm his country following the attack on the Indian Parliament, three months after 9/11; yet, he fails, again, to consider that the men behind this attack were from Pakistan. I mean, intending to have sex with an unresponsive play-possum woman who seems just about to be subjected to vivisection makes no sense unless you are into necrophilia. Content both financially and socially, Changez is enthusiastic about his new life as a New Yorker. Ultimately, the novel should cause the reader to reflect and to question the process by which they make their own assumptions.
He motivates his students to have pride in their Pakistani nationalism. Over and over, Nair returns to that idea of perspective, and how our own prejudices and preferences shape our actions and reactions. Hamid drops what may be interpreted as hints throughout, though the truth lies in our own minds. In any case, this is an interesting test case in the adaptation process and in an understanding of the differences between literature and cinema. Source found February 12.
