When we first began our homeschool journey in 2015, I bought Exploring Countries and Cultures and God's World from A to Z from My Father's World. MFW meets the needs of our family so well! After 1st grade (or 2nd depending on ages of kids), you start a family cycle you do Bible, History, Geography, and Science together as a family, then split for more individualized age-appropriate learning in Math and Language Arts. I have been using MFW for 10 years, and never once used/done all the assignments in a given week. DS 11 & DD 9 ECC, Spectrum English & Spelling, TT 4 & 5, Everybody Rosetta Stone Italian. I think it would be easier to combine your kids with MFW if that is something you'd like to do in the future. Both of them chose My Father's World easily and quickly. I quickly tossed the manuals and just started reading the books how I wanted to and teaching what I wanted to. I briefly mentioned the cost earlier but this is a huge difference, as well. It's perfect for a new homeschool mom who might be intimidated with the thought of lesson planning. This is meant to be taken to the library and used as a jumping off point to go deeper in a subject if you want. And something unique I think is that MFW tests all these activities with many families, decides which are doable, and schedules a realistic amount of time in the teacher guide to do these things. I like that Sonlight begins with American History, a more accessible touch point for younger students than ancient contexts and cultures. MFW on the other hand, is very Biblically based. We love the opportunities for ministry that are provided. However, there is a fabulous list of books in the back of the teacher's manual known as the book basket list.
We have always loved how many different History non-fiction "spine" resources and living books suggestions My Father's World provided or suggested, but this year it was back to one or two dry non-fiction textbooks, and pretty much no living book recommendations. Logical progression through history, science and bible. I'd probably use sonlight and just skip some of the stuff i saw as overload because #1 i like the materials they select and #2 they are more orthodox christian friendly. When you buy the main packages, you typically receive Bible, History, Science, Readers, Music, and Art. They expect each day of a program to be like a full buffet meal to be eaten in full. I look at some of those SL books from the early cores, and I wonder why I felt the need to read those books to my little kids! My Father's World also pre-reads and suggests only wholesome books (or has a note of what to watch for). What we loved was MFW gives you several book options for each subject in their "Book Basket" lists so there is no need to buy the books when I can borrow them for free, and you can read any or all that are available at your library.
In mfw's 1st grade, there are 2 books from Come Look with Me series. Some people say it is not rigorous enough in those young grades but I don't feel rigor is needed at those ages. Yes, you have to be active teaching from mfw 1st. It worked well for him. The manual gives insightful and specific discussion questions for them to discuss their History Spine (A History of the US by Joy Hakim) with me daily as their teacher. If the library doesn't have that exact book in the list, I can find a similar book on the same topic. Not only do My Father's World books and packages retain their value when selling used moreso than Sonlight, but it costs much less for several children than just one core of Sonlight.
