Can't find what you're looking for? I know other readers found this to be boring and lack any intensity but I haven't been this scared reading a book since NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, hands down the scariest novel I have read and I thought This Thing Between Us provided a similar fear but at a more muted level. It gets incredibly trippy toward the end and I'm not sure my brain was absorbing everything that was being thrown at it yet I am still so glad to have read this. Thiago is this story's punching bag protagonist, it punches emotionally and otherwise, above and below the proverbial belt. Dannie decides to head outside and explore her new neighborhood. I'll still check out Moreno's next book because he does capture mood so well, this plot just didn't work for me in the end. This is a political book about culture, migration, and identity... a fresh take on the genre that celebrates and pays tribute to its elements, from the gore to the cerebral stuff. The heaviness of the book though was just a tad too much for me with how palpable the depression was. Thank you to NetGalley and MCD x FSG Originals for my copy. This Thing between started as one book but gradually became something completely different, and I loved every second of it. There may be a barely-glimpsed smaller novel buried in all this succotash (Tom's marriage and life as a football coach), but it's sadly overwhelmed by the book's clumsy central narrative device (flashback ad infinitum) and Conroy's pretentious prose style: ""There are no verdicts to childhood, only consequences, and the bright freight of memory. Thiago is Mexican-American, but doesn't speak Spanish and isn't Mexican enough for Vera's family.
Fortunately in this free book guide to In Five Years, we'll dig deep into the conclusion. Considering this is a debut it has an impressive range of big hitters singing its praises, including Paul Tremblay, Brian Evenson, John Langan and Stephen Graham Jones who all provide cool quotes which incapsulate the spirit of the book nicely. In the book's first part, we see how Ryle ultimately wins Lily's heart: his initially elusive behavior is transformed by becoming more and more present and showing sincere interest in having an increasingly close and intimate relationship with Lily. She can see beyond the events of the here and now and actually envision another reality for herself. Then we move into the present and Thiago decides to move away from Chicago to Colorado. "In Five Years by Rebecca Serle, p. 251. It takes a strong writer to effectively use first person when first person's POV is predominately thought-based. Then some things begin to happen. I particularly appreciate the writing in This Thing Between Us, which is filled with a surprising amount of levity, considering the book deals with such a bleak subject matter.
"You were you and I was me and there was this thing between us. A ride you'll not soon forget. In the final paragraphs of the novel, Serle changes the prose in a subtle but important way. In the end, Moreno's This Thing Between Us does what only the best horror can — gives the reader reason to hold onto their humanity. This Thing Between Us kicks things off by killing (pun intended) the Final Girl trope and then moves on to use some well-known genre clichés and tips of the hat. Vera died after a fluke event occurs, and Thiago is mired in grief and self-blame. Will almost certainly make my Best Reads of the Year list!
We see Tessa and Skylar roam through Italy, wondering the world as one leading to the moment in a beachfront house where he confronts her with the idea of moving on without him. Unable to cope with his emotions, the attention, or the condo's escalating weirdness, Thiago crushes the Itza with his truck and uses Vera's life insurance to buy a fully furnished cabin near Estes Park, Colorado. From here, I cannot go further into a synopsis.
Even in his seclusion it appears he is not alone. Thiago's world is turned upside and everybody he knows doesn't care about him, just how they can spin her death to fit into their political agenda. No matter what she tried to do, she could not alter the course that sent her here. Thiago's descent into a nightmare where space isn't real and time is meaningless is somehow understandable, because while his case is unique, death haunts us all.
Part of it is because Thiago as a character bored me. I detect influence of Pet Sematary, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and even Drag Me to Hell (a 2009 movie from Sam Raimi). So what's it all mean? When she first has the vision, she had no clue who Aaron was or why she was living where she was living. Pub Date: Oct. 21, 1986. I wasn't creeped out or horrified or even preoccupied.
We saw her attempt to run down every avenue in finding the answers. Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The point of the novel was to instil fear and a straightforward ending would not have suited this read, the vagueness heightened the read in retrospect but upon finishing, my immediate reaction was confusion. In other words, she's narrating her story as if everything is happening while the reader reads it. I think a certain level of confusion is required by the story to maintain that off-balance feeling. Thiago couldn't care less, he just wants to be left alone. Ouch—his candor and bitter honesty kind of blow her mind.
Initially, written in second person, we listen to Thiago speaks to his late wife. After an awkward exchange, Aaron agrees to take it back. We start out knowing there's a connection and, like In Five Years, we then work to find out the connections. Andy Davidson, author of The Boatman's Daughter. It's snowing, the first snow storm of the year. Some readers may find the lack of focus the novel has mildly frustrating, also the obscureness of the supernatural entity, but I found these peculiarities fascinating and look forward to reading other reviews to see what I might have overlooked. Along the way, Thiago starts having weird things happen and starts having hallucinations until he gets to his new place. For that reason, I'm going with my gut and rounding up to 4 stars.
