In my opinion, they could lose this feature and save a few grams. I lost it in a fire a couple of years ago, and I'm not too thrilled about that. At first this seemed like a good way to gain some space in my pack, but now I would highly advise against this practice. It replaced my 20-year-old EMS bag that stopped keeping me warm in the 50s. It has held up well, and kept me warm for the most part.
