But that's all second-order stuff; the first order is that The NeverEnding Story is extremely adept at making the world feel tattered and lost and fading. Much of the spellbinding narrative focuses on a particular fictional book called "Inkheart, " and there's even a delightful section where the writer of that book comes face to face with his fictional characters. The movie's director, Wolfgang Petersen, is accustomed to creating worlds in small places; his last film, "Das Boot" (The Boat), took place almost entirely within a submarine. Partnered with the magical, fun-loving Flip (voiced by Mickey Rooney in the American dub), Slumberland's King Morpheus (Bernard Erhard), and his advisor Professor Genius ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" star Rene Auberjonois), Nemo's journey leads to an epic battle with the Nightmare King (Bill Martin). Overall, this collection gives classic fairy-tale tropes a sly and refreshing twist. In "Stardust, " the line between the normal world and one of fantasy is separated not by the pages of magical books or dreams, but instead by a physical border between the two realities. Maybe not since the kids in the audience were asked to save Tinker Bell in "Peter Pan" has the outcome of a story been left so clearly up to a child's willingness to believe. The story of a boy immersed in a magical fantasy book that follows a child warrior tasked with saving the land of Fantasia from The Nothing—a representation of the human world's loss of hopes and dreams. Of course, things aren't exactly as they seem, and the evil side of the School for Good and Evil spices things up for two best friends who are attending. Each film in the NeverEnding Story series is the work of a different director. So I must admit to feeling that it's a bit too remote, forbidding even. Even so, the film was a success and it left an indelible mark on the imaginations of a generation of children while also spending off several sequels. Bastian, an avid reader, hides inside an old bookstore at the beginning of the movie, in order to hide from some bullies. Like "Slumberland" and so many other fantasy films for younger audiences, this one isn't just focused on delivering awesome fantasy moments (of which there's still plenty), but also some more grounded coming-of-age drama.

Of course he is running from the demon spawn who are bullying him. Don't let the PG rating fool you either, as both time and a number of positive critical reviews have proven the film to be a favorite for audiences of all ages. The NeverEnding Story comes attached to a very important fun fact: it was, at the time of its release in 1984, the most expensive film ever made in the history of the German film industry (East, West, or unified), and by an extravagant margin: at DM 60 million, it was almost twice the budget of the previous record-holder, 1981's Das Boot. Teen Wolf follows Scott Howard, a high school basketball player who finds out he has a family curse that makes him turn into a werewolf, which he only just discovered after sprouting some excess hair and growing fangs. Meanwhile the six-year-old just wants to ride a white-haired luck dragon, just like Bastian did.

Equal parts fantasy and drama, there are some genuinely scary moments as well that make it better for older kids than young ones. And this despite the script, adapted by Petersen & Herman Weigel, not actually presenting itself as especially dreamy.
