You see the potential and wish they could be the novel that you know it could be with the right editor and plenty of work thrown into it. Fresh Water for Flowers deserves you. I struggled a bit with the constantly changing timelines but those timelines allow the mystery to unfold slowly. But Violette finds an advertisement for cemetery keepers in Bourgogne, which comes with an all-expenses-paid house, and the couple soon have new employment. Each chapter begins with a poetic thought, too moving not to share a few: "When we miss one person, everywhere becomes deserted. Violette shared the job of the cemetery caretaker, if not in actual caretaking with her husband, Philippe Toussaint, who was a man too lazy to do much more than play video games or ride off on his motorcycle while Violette did the work. Valerie Perrin's translated novel is a pitch perfect meditation on life, death, love, marriage, motherhood, tragedy, loss, grief, and learning to live after the worst has happened. Which is perhaps what Fresh Water For Flowers does, taking characters in unconventional circumstances and sharing their stories, watching how those stories shock, enlighten, end and change lives. Even so, Ledger is afraid that if he surrenders to his feelings, Scotty's parents will kick him out of Diem's life. There is a complexity to all of the characters that make this such an unforgettable and rewarding experience, even Philippe has his own difficult family backstory and feelings of regrets that he cannot express. The details of the life of a keeper, whether it's the level crossing or the cemetery are so realistic, evocative and visual, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that this book may be turned into a series; it's too long for a movie and with so many interconnecting lives, it feels like it could have continued on, just as life and death does, always someone arriving, someone departing, and someone there to soothe the way through those transitions. There is a large cast of likable unforgettable characters who cross Violette's path, and we learn their story as Violette's past and present life are slowly revealed. She maintains the grounds and graves and grows vegetables and flowers in her gardens, creating a wonderful sense of place that provokes your sense of sight, smell, taste, and sound. Abandoned by her husband years ago she spends her days taking great care of the cemetery, growing flowers, cleaning headstones, reading epitaphs and meeting people to whom she provides comfort in their times of bereavement and distress.
