If we read to understand other people better, I left this book with a sense that my community had expanded in the most wonderful way. My Year of Rest and Relaxation is in many ways an ideal period piece of pre–Iraq War New York. Understandably, 9/11 become a major touchstone in American fiction. It was a book about a girl who wants to sleep for a full year, but somehow we still had a lot to talk about! That's exactly what it is. She mercilessly exposes the falseness of our representations, where identity is curated... With her disastrously bad decisions, her lack of any conventional ambition, her misanthropy, our 'somnophile' narrator will be off-putting for many readers. Each vignette showed not only their relationship with each other but how that relationship was shaped by nature and the way they interacted with their environment.

It's small, but it really bothers me, lol. It made me feel that the issues I struggle with are valid, and that all it takes to be alive, at the end of the day, is the will to persist. While nothing truly remarkable happens in these forty days, Moshfegh's writing kept me entranced. HG: The sleep project is so extreme, it's almost as if she wants to erase part of her identity. It's comforting, in a way, to read a novel that indulges in such a fantasy at a time when retiring from the world was sort of acceptable, when neoliberalism—not fascism—was the menace of the day. Yet, it seems her old friend has now tired of her, with Reva dismissing the narrator's calls.
I don't know what I was expecting to be honest, but for sure not to loathe that novel so much. There had been references to Kids These Days in quite a few of the non-fiction books I read last year, so I wanted to delve deeper into it for myself. I think I would have liked to have heard more from her about these new shapes of power, but as she mentioned in the footnotes this is a book that was taken from two lectures and the question of what a more inclusive mental and social model for power might be would be a whole book in and of itself. To be clear, I mean that as a compliment... In my eyes, her timeline looks like.
Then you start to wonder where it's all heading. Moshfegh makes X's voluntary incarceration compelling and darkly funny for the first 150 pages. How would you have reacted? This is the catch: we live in the main character's thoughts, her disdain for the world and people colours her view. Bereavement – especially following the death of a loved one – is utterly crushing. The climate anxiety felt very real. For the novel's protagonist, it seemed to me that two momentous deaths in painfully close succession were simply too much to bear. Partially, that's accomplished through this fictional drug Infermiterol. She says on page 48 that she was born in August 1973, but on page 78 says she turned 25 on August 20, 2000. I don't know if it was because I was enjoying reading it so much, or the pacing (I've found all of Moshfegh's novels I've read start slow and then race to the end in the last quarter or less) but it felt like it ended halfway through.
The mix of Hendren's personal and professional reflections struck the perfect mix of informative and engaging. It is severe, ruinous and life-shattering. She weaves references from ancient Greece to the present to show how the issues of women and power shouldn't just be discussed in terms of how women can shape themselves for power but how we can reshape our notions of power to be more empowering. The book is different in scope and timeframe, but will make for an interesting comparison! Our protagonist, a privileged, pretty and rich young woman, tries to spend an entire year sleeping in an attempt to solve all her problems. I was drawn to reading this one because I wanted to know more about how to be a better more engaged listener, as both a researcher and a friend. She is also the author of the short story collection Homesick for Another World. On the surface, Ottessa Moshfegh's idiosyncratic book is all about an unnamed, privileged protagonist who, struggling with a spiral of detachment from reality, indulges in prescription narcotics so as to sleep away an entire year. Does sleep count as doing something? It felt at once real and hilarious but also filled with a magic you only find in the woods. But her bracing self-awareness, mordant humor, and flashes of vulnerability endear her to us. So while the main character might not be a likeable person, she sure is an interesting one whose story took me to unexpected places and will stay with me for quite some time. In place of the antic sarcasm of the beginning of the novel, she now speaks in anodyne clichés: 'Pain is not the only touchstone for growth, I said to myself. This quick summary seems to raise more questions than answers; but, the plot of this book is difficult to explain to those who haven't read it.
And your response was that's not the first time someone has said that to you, which was an unexpected response. What does the narrator mean—and why is her "project beyond" identity and society, etc.? In audiobook format, I have to say I struggled with the glossary lists, but I can imagine they made for brilliant reference material in the physical book. Despite the museum guard's warning to step back, the narrator reaches out to touch the canvass of a painting.
All this is delivered as comic—it is comic—but it's not exactly funny, though of course we laugh... Also, the series gets better with each book, so win win. But when I put myself in her position, she really has zero responsibility to anybody else. The audiobook is brilliantly read and despite its often painful content I didn't want to put it down.
Ribald passages, unapologetic dialogue, and a plot structure only she can devise. As I've come to expect from her writing everything was easy to read while being erudite and clever without being the kind of satire that puts me off. And so even the numbing is a strategy to ignore the 'unknown'. But the honesty in her narration is what really made this one stand out. That is a lot to achieve. I don't think I've ever read something that has gotten so close to describing where I'm at with my mental health as well as this did.
