The opera managers think it's all a funny prank at the expense of their newness, but the phantom is willing to prove just how volatile he is. The Persian tries to find the latch but can't. The book really shows how much he tormented Christine, tricked her, manipulated her, and forced her to do what he wanted. They hear Christine and the Phantom return and he tells her to pick which knob she wants to turn-the scorpion knob which will mean she will marry him, or the grasshopper knob which will mean the end of everyone. One of the most important themes is man's inhumanity to man. Erik's ruling over the Opera House gives us the dark and suspenseful overtones present throughout the book.
I tried so hard to like it. Young ballet dancers fret and gossip about seeing the fabled Opera Ghost. There are close-ups, zoom outs, panoramas and variety of character angles so the reader isn't bored as they go through.
