All in all, I did enjoy reading Not Without My Sister and will certainly read other books by Marion Kummerow. He taught her how to survive the deplorable conditions of the camp by teaching her how to get scraps of food and collecting various items that could be used as currency in the future. The author, Marion Kummerow, was inspired to write Not Without My Sister when she visited the concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen and saw the "Children in Concentration Camps" exhibition. Very poignant and grips your soul. In the darkest moments when I question fate, I ask myself why can't Putin get it? While all of her novels are written in verse, this one felt the most like straight poetry to me. Stop Pretending: What Happened When My Big Sister Went Crazy by Sonya Sones. Rachel, on the other side of the camp, has to dig deep within herself to find the strength to face many moral dilemmas, to make difficult decisions and to continue to fight for what was right. Yet believe me, Not Without My Sister is not a novel full of doom and gloom – it is story of determination, love and hope. To be there with her even when the room falls ominously silent… I will cherish that. Heartbreaking is a term used many a time to describe books of this nature but here it is very true as I couldn't believe what was unfolding and it was quite upsetting and harrowing everything that the girls experienced. But that's really it. Mindel is bewildered, she is four years old and has no one who loves her to take care of her. Her friends were amazing and we raised £10, 000 in a single weekend.
As Mindel grew up in the camps, we see the innocence and questioning of the young children. As Rachel and Mindel carry hope in their hearts that they will see each other again, that this war will end and that there is a better and brighter world out there waiting for they can just survive the war. One would think even in the worst of times, being forced into the terrible living conditions of a concentration camp, that no one would just ignore a small child, but this is exactly what Mindel faces when she is separated from her sister, Rachel. Not Without My Sister was told from the POV of Rachel, 17 years old and her sister, Mindel who was only 4 when they were captured and sent to the Nazi Camps. It come across so true that it is almost as if the author wrote from personal experience. My sister is a tough cookie though. Time must have moved very slowly for them. When reading this book, if you look past the small rhymes and coded wording you will find a way bigger meaning in the poems. Only 2 stars for 2 main reasons: this story has been told over and over in many books and I had a really hard time reconciling that one of the main characters was 4 years old. This story is a page turner, but not in the usual sense, I wanted to know if they survived the terror that they ended up in. Nothing is more important than family. I'll often mix it with spices to use as dip for raw veggies, or blend with chicken and sweet peppers for an easy chicken salad. Night with my sister raw wwe. It gets so out of control that she must be placed in a mental institution. This is a very short book, much shorter than "What My Mother Doesn't Know" and "What My Girlfriend Doesn't Know" that I enjoyed more, but not less touching and poignant. I really get very angry whenever I read about the atrocities the Nazis did to the children, the way they spoke to them, and even hit them like if they were not going to break. Overall, I enjoyed this book, but found some areas where the transition between subjects seemed a bit forced or strange. Patti LaBelle or somebody, nigga? Highly, highly recommend.
It was of a very young girl - of no more than 4 or 5 years old - with a stuffed animal in her arms. Life became a series of endless camps with little food and little to do beyond surviving. When she was there she viewed this temporary exhibition on the children in these camps. If you read Kummerow's notes at the end of the story you will see mention of some of the games the children played such as "SS or Jew" or "Who dies next. " There is no point in going on. How can a beautiful little girl with only her rag doll, Paula, as her companion make it through the horrific experience the prisoners in the camp were forced to endure. If it weren't for Laszlo and Mother Brinkmann, I don't think Mindel would have survived long at all. Make sure you read the author's notes at the end of the book as she writes about her experiences when she visited Bergen-Belsen as well as interviews with people who had been children there before they were liberated. I only have one qualm, and that is the issue of calling mentally ill people crazy. So when Laszlo came up with a plan to escape to Switzerland, Mindel refused to leave for fear of never finding her sister again. Lady pimp ain't havin' that shit.
