I would say that everyone should give this book a try because It was readable and likable but it wasn't what the hype made it to be (secretly wished I read this before I read Before We Were Strangers). She blames Trevor for their failed relationship (yet doesn't leave him). The two begin a songwriting partnership that grows into something more once Sydney dumps Hunter and decides to crash with Ridge and his two roommates while she gets back on her feet. Her roommate comes home talking about a new author, J. Don't get me wrong they were adorable and the fact that Jason wrote a book about their past would have made any girl swoon and reading from their past and present was a good idea but I NEEDED more present for me to get emotionally invested with Emiline and Jase. Happy tears sobbing!!!! I hoped that the present storyline would be handled more maturely and with more feels than the past storyline, but it wasn't.
I highly recommend it to everyone! I'm still giving this book five stars because it was really good. I never saw Harbor Westcott coming. Swear on This Life simply blew me story is unique, captivating, emotional and sweet.
I teared up a few times, but I never needed any tissues. Swear on this life. So yeah, not a fan, so even with my bestie's huge endorsement I had my doubts. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending. I really liked this one for the first 85ish% of the book, but sadly the writing style and the events that took place in the last part ruined it completely for me.

The bad would be all of the times when they didn't have money for food, an alcoholic father and eventually having to leave Jase behind. Lily swears she'll never end up in another abusive home, but when Ryle starts to show all the same warning signs that her mother ignored, Lily learns just how hard it is to say goodbye.
Overall Opinion: This is a really tough one for me to rate. We were hooked from the first page till the last despite a beginning with a distinct tone that had us thinking we were being led onto an entirely different path. As Emiline reads the book, it drudges up feelings she thought she had locked away. I loved that it was very plot driven and very well written. The story based in the past had more potential and a lot more to work with. "It's easy to let yourself become the burden of your own life, especially when you were given the label of being a burden before you could even reject it. ❝We can't always control our circumstances, who our parents are, where we live, or how much money we make, but in those rare moments when we can shape our fate, when we do have the power to make our own happiness, we can't be too scared to do it.
There always seems to be something that doesn't work for me, but this one was written perfectly. If you can surrender to the idea that there might be a plan, instead of reducing every magical moment to a coincidence, then love will find you. I just didn't get the author's reunion vision between these two. Going into this book, I thought we would focus more on Emiline's life as an adult with the book and the past playing an important background role but instead the past dominated most of the book and the real story with our real characters were just left neglected. While Cara has been published twice already, Em is struggling to write something that she wants to have her professor review, much less publish.
Unfortunately, I was very much disappointed in this book. And he made her life bearable. Why wouldn't these two just communicate about their feelings before? Renée is an amazing author, don't get me wrong, but this book does her no justice! Emiline and Trevor are in a stale but stable relationship when Emi's roommate gives her a copy of the latest bestseller. I knew all of this, but I wasn't sure how to get out of the rut. What will happen with Emiline & Jason??? I couldn't set it down. Since most of the story was told in the past, I felt like I knew the child version of Emiline better than the adult version. I loved the retelling of their story from Jase's perspective but though Em's POV. She feels like he really doesn't want to be there. However, older Jase wasn't perfect in my mind either... But oh, the love story he held and gave to us. There was one scene that moved me a little, but most of the other scenes with Emi confronting her past felt hollow and lacked emotional intensity. Jase, her childhood best friend. The provocative opening takes a dark turn when Lily receives a warning about Ryle's intentions from his sister, who becomes Lily's employee and close friend.
