Using the appropriate fluid for your vehicle and a funnel, add to the power steering reservoir to top it off. As a result, the brake pedal travels below its standard throw, and the brake pedal goes to the floor. After one hour there should be at least two power assisted brake application with the engine off. When I looked at this diagram and saw accumulator I wondered about that. Mine worked fine, but had a bad enough leak to lower the fluid level enough to cause the pump to whine about every 1000 miles. Topped up the m/c resvoir any time it got close to half way down.
There are two main reasons why the hydro-boost brake pedal goes to the floor. If measurements are the same, go to step 5. If that thing fails the brakes get all weird similar to what you describe. Could there be something wrong with the rest of your brakes? If the hydo-boost leaks, it is defective and should be replaced or repaired. Fill the reservoir, then with the engine running, rotate the steering wheel back and forth several times, lock to lock. This vents the pressure in the power chamber to the power steering pump reservoir through the return line.
If applications are power assisted, go to next step. Brake Fluid Leakage. Make sure the steering wheel is centered and start the engine. I bypassed the equalizing valve under the master cylinder thinking maybe that was problem. Keep your eyes on the fluid levels in the MC at all times though, as if you were to accidentally let one of the fluid wells in the MC suck dry = you have just shot yourself in the foot requiring you to start all over again (MC will have gotten filled with air again) DOH! I learned it just stores pressure so you have it when vehicle is first it can build pressure. The faulty brake shoes enlarge the air gap between the drum and the shoe. I'm going to suspect some sort of bizarre combination of degraded seals in the M/C.
