Here Tommy Lee Jones's acting and direction are magnificent and remaining cast is pretty well, giving terrific performances. Anyway, The Homesman has been called a feminist Western because it shows how incredibly hard it was (and is) to be a woman and meet everyone's expectations but keep your mental health intact. Mary Bee Cuddy and the women she is chaperoning start to become living breathing characters as their histories are explored, and they even have a few moments of badassery. I did continue to read, though, because I just had to know if I'd been really and truly betrayed or if my despair would be ultimately rewarded with some soaring allegorical resolution. The Homesman, Glendon Swarthout's award winning novel called the Best Western Novel of the year back in 1988, is a deeply moving tale, a riveting thriller and an American West adventure in the style reminiscent of Larry McMurtry. I assure you, there are other ways that God may have also intended. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is I think it suffers from comparison to The Good Old Boys, which I read just before picking The Homesman up. Belying his gruff persona, The Homesman possesses a great subtlety and delicacy, not least in its portrayal of the plight of women in the Old West. The film gives an unflinching look at this, lingering on moments that are hard to watch but must be seen in order to understand the pain that they went through. I have a great ranch, and we have wonderful neighbors, a great doctor, and all the food you can eat. He's a bit of a buffoon, in his filthy long-johns and whining voice, but he needs the money.
