People who don't understand the 'show' vs 'tell' distinction but use it anyway, people who have the vocabulary of a 12 year old, and people who are unwilling to put in any effort whatsoever hate it. Reading it is a pleasure thanks to Bakker's style; it's engrossing thanks to the characters and the story; and it's funny if you can train-spot all the historical references. Best scene in story: Kellhus uses his almost supernatural powers of mental manipulation to undercut the all-powerful Nansur Empire and get Cnaiur installed as leader of the Inrithi host. And Bakker's character list certainly includes interesting characters - which is great. One thing I like to do with these reviews is not to really reveal much about it but instead argue for it on more observable generalizations. I don't need to cheer their every move. I reckon this book is not a walk in the park, Bakker's prose gets a bit cryptical here and there. High-born men, even emperors and kings, had a habit of seeming as base and as petty as the most vulgar fisherman.
