To make our gospel unity a visible reality in the church, the church must grow in maturity. And so we create factions and quarrel and combat and withdraw from one another over our differences rather than uniting together upon our shared salvation in Christ Jesus. Today, we are going into greater depth about the role and responsibility of every member to build up the church. That love must be undergirded by wisdom and discernment. He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. For the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ, Young's Literal Translation. Proverbs tells us man plans his ways but the Lord establishes his steps. In the church, there is no longer any distinction between Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free, because all are united equally in Christ to form his Body, the church (Galatians 3:28).

The saints are to build up the body of Christ "until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. " Central to God's pattern for His Church is specific direction for how the Church should function. Every believer has been given a gift, or gifts, for ministry. He wants us to manifest His character and to walk as He walked.
We express this oneness. As in many of these shows this couple loves to take old, sometimes dilapidated houses and turn them into beautiful restored homes. We are given a glimpse into what a God-honoring walk looks like: humility, gentleness, patience, forbearing love, and eagerness to maintain the unity of the Spirit. In yesterday's devotion, I underscored the fact that there is no ministry outside of the church because, indeed, all Christian ministry is done by members of Christ's body. Strong's 1248: Waiting at table; in a wider sense: service, ministration. But it is by "truthing in love" that "we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ. This church's unity, maturity, and growth are your responsibility and mine. You may be so old that you have studied the Bible for decades and followed Jesus with Peter and the disciples. Not for building up my own ego, not for becoming a bigger fish in a rather small pond, but for building up the body of Christ. In due course we will study the armor or God in Ephesians 6 and it will be apparent that the common denominator to each component of the armor of God and our defense against the realm of darkness, is His truth. They almost always make that assessment based on their perceived needs, rather than the needs of others. To equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.
Ephesians 4:11-13 says, "He Himself gave some as apostles and some as prophets and some as evangelists and some as shepherds and teachers, for the perfecting of the saints unto the work of the ministry, unto the building up of the Body of Christ, until we all arrive at the oneness of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God, at a full-grown man, at the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. As every member is filled with the knowledge of the Son of God, unity in the church becomes sweeter, like a fragrant aroma. The whirligig is designed to respond and move at the command of the wind. You are helping the church become more vital, mature, and effective in its mission. The claim that people are sick or poor only because of a lack of faith is made to sound believable. Thus our fellowship should be based only on the Body of Christ. Searching for a sense of belonging, individuals will join social groups, book clubs, or even special associations and societies. It is that God's people will be equipped to do better work for him, building up the Church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity; But that doesn't mean you should all look and speak and act the same.
Just as the church is not a building and is not to be equated with the nation of Israel in the Old Testament, so also is the church not headed or controlled by a human representative. Based on Scripture, the church is distinct from Israel and is unique to this time. Jesus said He would build His Church and apart from His supernatural intervention, no genuine growth happens. In his assumption of our humanity, Christ exalts our human nature by his grace. Our hope is in Him and His sacrifice for our sins on the cross at Calvary as sufficient for our salvation. Your fellow members are a gift because while you may be weak and struggling in one area, another member may be strong. May include gentle admonishment.
Perhaps what's most deadly for the church is when they set the bar of maturity to the lowest common denominator, leading to spiritual stagnation and staleness. And a church, growing in its unity, functions in a similar way. Both tendencies are unbalanced and unbiblical. Ephesians 2 tells us how Christ has made us one—unity was achieved in the past, namely, at the cross of Christ. Others make the opposite mistake. We are surrounded by every imaginable wind of doctrine. There are a few exceptions where that simply isn't possible, for example someone living in a country hostile to Biblical Christianity who is saved by hearing the Word of truth, the Gospel of salvation via the internet or radio and is unaware of any other believers in his/her area.

The pattern for the Church that leaps from the pages of Scripture is the interdependent relationship among believers that Christ designed as His pattern for His Church.
