I must say, how this could have been so loved in Spain, makes me wonder about such a culture...... Victoria was the Newcomer of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards 2007 and won the Richard & Judy Summer Read competition. The magic of the first novel is missing but it is still a good read if rather clunky at times. But she also finds herself unexpectedly - and uncontrollably - falling in love with Hemingway, a man on his way to becoming a legend. Book review: ‘The Return’ by Victoria Hislop. The same occurs with the Hand of Fatima, the descriptions of Granada, Cordoba and the Alpujarra allow the steps of the characters in the story to be retraced; being able to walk along the same roads described and touch the same walls that we read about really appeals to the reader. I was not expecting this to be like 'The Island' for the simple reason that it is a sequel. This second part of the book tells the story of the Ramirez's and how their world and lives are affected by the war. The characters are wonderfully drawn and whilst being fairly hard nosed I am still a girl who likes to think true love exists. Eventually, the tone darkens and the story narrows to focus on Jude as the pain of his past cuts deep into his carefully constructed phrase "tour de force" could have been invented for this audacious novel.

I liked that the author doesn't spend a lot of time recapping the story at the beginning of the book, which can be really annoying, but instead includes facts when necessary. Her descriptions of Mercedes' passion for Javier definitely pulled at my heart, and I breathed shallowly through each of their love-tense scenes. I really didn't know much about the Spanish Civil War and this book had a lot of insight into that time - I actually felt I learned something while reading it. I really enjoyed Victoria Hislops The Island so as soon as I saw this had been released I put my name down at the library to borrow a copy. I read both of these books earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. If you have an interest in Flamenco dancing, Andalusia or in Spain but don´t particularly love history or politics this book is for you. Victoria hislop latest book releases. But is the male dominated world of haute couture, who would use her art for their own gain, ready for her? It sometimes reads like a tourist's understanding of Spain — yes, flamenco is based in Andalucía but that doesn't mean that *everyone* there is going to like it, does it?

In this conflict it was sometimes hard to say if anyone was completely without blame, whether Nationalists or Republicans. Fotini reveals the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother Eleni and her daughters, and a family rent by tragedy, war, and passion. I found myself skimming those parts because I felt that it was written from a hindsight perspective. I highly enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone - there's a little bit of everything (love, hate, drama, violence, adventure) in it, so it can definitely appease a wide variety of readers.
