I purchased Adventures for my advanced 1st grader (it's designed for 2nd/3rd grade) used from the My Father's World Used Curriculum Exchange group on Facebook. As parents we are encouraged to read aloud. Most of all though it was at this point that I realized how important it is for me to have Bible integrated with History and used as the History spine. I could never deal with all that now. Loved seeing the titles again in MFW as well. I had 2 in the family cycle and 1 in Kindergarten.

It's done for you in MFW! I stayed with Sonlight for a few years. I tried to add that. MFW definitely isn't easier. If I used it, I would choose some required reading with it. As I said before, I originally wanted Sonlight. Now they are pulling non fiction and fiction books out of the library to read on their own. This is first grade! Instead of skimming the surface they are really learning the depth of one topic covered over an entire year. I think MFW does a better job of incorporating all 3 learning styles. MFW is a great program but it doesn't schedule a lot of reading so that bugs me, if your son doesn't like to read much it might be a good fit but I would worry that it isn't going to help him develop a love of reading either. I use a lot of Sonlight (but I pick and chose the read-alouds because I use a different history curriculum). With the 'curriculum' of MFW I feel like they learn a lot, like they would in school. With mfw, any enrichment reading is that - enrichment, but not a specific required title. The Bible feels tacked on to me. Perhaps you love the idea of reading great literature aloud while your children gather round or you know that it is easier to relate to people of historical times with historical fiction than simply dates. Our crazy boys are 11, 9, 8, 5 and our sweet twin girls are 2!

Adventures has hands on projects for the art and artsy children (my DD), good read alouds-but not too many, for the children who love listening to stories (DS 1 and 2) but moms who like to read to their children but don't want to do it all day (me), food projects, and some textbooky type books for moms who want a few non fiction books to tie facts into the good historical fiction books-and my children even enjoyed those bc they were mixed in nicely with the "funner" books! There are many people who love SL and can give you their comparison. Before I begin, please remember that no matter what curriculum you chose, remember your teacher's manual does not know your kids like you do! I'm okay sharing negative things with my children if there is a redemptive quality to it or because that is the truth in this world and our hope is ultimately Jesus. The history and literature wwere scheduled to be chronological, from Creation to Modern Times. Ninth Grade's history study was only Creation to the Greeks, so I assumed 10th grade would follow the family cycle and do Rome to Reformation, but I bought the 10th grade World History and Literature (which I sold without using) and it CRAMS all the history from Rome to Modern Times into one year. The MFW activities perfectly tie in with what you're doing and don't just waste time. I don't get to do those lessons.
