When confronted by Carl, he not only denies being Joey, but claims to have never been in Philadelphia. The scenes set in Philadelphia were actually shot in Toronto, Canada. Ed Harris chose Viggo Mortensen largely on having worked with him in this movie. All in all, I found the movie a HUGE disappointment and I'd be very suprised if this walked away with any major awards come Oscar-time. Truly a master of the art, he`s outstanding in this movie. A History of Violence can be seen as a thriller, but in many ways it works best during its quieter moments. "A History of Violence" is no exception. Later in the movie Jack finds out about his Dad's past and reacts in an unconvincing way. Sin City perhaps or maybe Road To Perdistion... the violence is over the top for a reason.

I`ve seen a lot of these "independent movies" lately and although a number of them are good, the majority are totally overrated. But this is quibbling. The violence in this movie is quite graphic yet frightening; two men rob a diner and forces the man to give them money or his partner will forcefully try to rape one of his waitresses. It`s a very convincing performance, but no better than the rest and I don`t think it would have been such a great challenge for an actor of his experience anyway.
After that though, once the diner scene happens the film takes another genre turn, and the intensity never lets up. It shows the family trying desperately to forget what`s happened and returning to normal, I really liked that. In actuality, makeup was used to downplay the number of bruises Bello received from filming the scene. Every part of the movie (writing, directing, producing, camera angles, acting) appeared to have been fulfilled by the equivalent of a high school student attempting to complete his end-of-the-semester project the night before it was due. Listen to these next... A friend and fellow fan of the film wrote me that this was "not the sort of thing the academy would support. " I enjoyed this very much but I felt a little disappointed by the ending. This movie is phenomenal: from the long take, no cutting opening to the incongruity of Ed Harris' car in the small town to Viggo experiencing a rebirth after having killed his brother, to the brilliant and wordless scene that closes the film, this movie is almost virtuoso beyond belief. Ultimately, this film appeals to that very basic human satisfaction of seeing the bullies, mobsters, and thrill killers of the world get their due at the hands of the underdog. The real question we should ask ourselves after watching this tale of the American dream is: can violence be forgiven? Be warned, both the sex and the violence are at 100%. A film that starts in on you hard--but slowly--giving you just one long chance (a monumental single shot sequence) to get up to speed and recognize that if you ever think the story is uneven, implausible, it's because YOU aren't getting it.
