It's weird, because as I was reading this, I had the impression that Neil LaBute may be getting script inspiration from Maury Povich, but then I also saw the germs of actual interesting good ideas in the play and thought that maybe a (sorry Neil) better playwright would read this and craft something really tragic and amazing. LaBute directs this one himself and the whole cast is great (notably Thomas Sadoski, who originated the role of Greg on Broadway, and Jenna Fischer, playing delightfully against type as Steph) and really drives home the fact that his snappy dialogue is meant to be heard. No but I'm actually seething you don't understand honestly i don't understand why I'm so mad.
LaBute's gritty drama about the demise of a couple after the guy is overheard describing his girl as having a "regular"-looking face is loaded with sharp banter and realistic relationships that are less than perfect, and the show's dark humor is not lost on director Bryan Tank's cast. Like other leading men in Neil LaBute plays, he is far more affable than the male supporting characters (who are always foul-mouthed jerks).
