A few weeks ago now, I read the highly acclaimed 2018 novel My Year of Rest and Relaxation. While the book does get a bit dark sometimes, I do not think the book will leave you feeling sad, enraged maybe, but definitely not sad. The nothingness and exhausted retreating reminded me of some of my own worst trips. I read this book back in November 2018 and I remember having so many feelings towards the main character and how she approached life.
Perhaps she identifies with it. The Soil Will Save Us. That was such a shallow depiction of mental health and the 2000s in my opinion, and the prose was so damn annoying and lyrical just for the sake of being lyrical that like, please… no. Girl, Woman, Other was so brilliantly written and brilliantly interwoven that I momentarily forgot my usual frustration with short stories and perspective switching. The novel ends with 9/11 and one of the characters is alluded to a woman who jumped from the twin towers. It was as much a story of growing up as it was of growing in a relationship with their mother and history, but those are two things that are impossible to untie. I wasn't invested in Melissa, Michael or Damian and no point in the plot hooked me in. Moshfegh has established the parallels between both periods so well, the connective tissue that sees one epoch emerge monstrously from the other.
It's a book that does exactly what it says on the tin, it tells you the story of a weekend in New York. The character definitely came first—this young woman's habitual, day-to-day behavior and her avoidance of her life and her world. In almost every one of the sections, there was a small revelation of 'I've never had to think about it like that' whether it was in how you get to the office or around a hotel, in how you view bowel control or what's sexy, or just what it means to be able to have a voice in the world you inhabit. She sleeps, eats, and watches lots of VHS movies. It was a place she could land safely and it was on TV and she could watch it over and over again the way that she could with her VHS tapes. Talk about the nature of that change. I would love to be able to turn any single moment of my life, let alone one so heartbreaking, into such searing copy.
Of Speculation, which I read earlier this year, but I felt more connected to the narrator. Why is touching so important? I think I would have liked to have heard more from her about these new shapes of power, but as she mentioned in the footnotes this is a book that was taken from two lectures and the question of what a more inclusive mental and social model for power might be would be a whole book in and of itself. I'd highly recommend it as an audiobook because it reads as a great storyteller in a pub, telling you tales of a creature they love. The perspective switching didn't quite offer the depth of character I was looking for from the characters aside from the main narrator, Will. For myself, and many others who have experienced the pain of loss, this unique story endures as a strange and penetrating comfort. The ludicrous nature of it all won't be to everyone's taste, but I revelled in it... For Moshfegh 9/11 is the moment where we all woke up, where the minutiae of life were deluged by externalities out of our control (not that they ever were).
