It is such a lovely heartwarming story that revolves around three very different characters. And, really there is some mystery to Remarkably Bright Creatures, as Tova still searches for answers to her son Eric's disappearance from a boat on the Sound so many years ago and Cameron is searching for the dad he never knew. Every so often, a debut novel comes along that is so perfectly polished and emotionally resonant that it seems impossible you don't already own several of the author's previous works. This book is a top-rated pic for the Jenna Bush Hagar book club. The chapters are divided into the three main characters' stories—Tova, Marcellus, and Cameron, told from their point of view. Of course, Marcellus can't talk to her, but he responds to her presence and emerges from his usual hiding place when she stops to talk to him. This was a very emotional book written in such a different way.
Tova, Cameron and Marcellus each have meaningful personal journeys and their lives come together at the Sowell Bay Aquarium and intertwine in a magical way. Will it ever happen? It made the experience really cool because it was so subtle but made everything finally just fit perfectly. All the characters are some degree of lost in this book, including Marcellus. I'm going to hunt me down some more octopi to read about while I look forward to seeing what this author comes up with next! At least that's how it was for me. Voice is meticulous, but I find it fun work! Each subject is handled carefully and compassionately, but what truly elevates the narrative is the courageous thrust into the fantastical. The author brought him to life as she did all of the human people in this beautiful and haunting story. He finds a job at the aquarium where he meets Tova, and at this point in the story I began to suspect how it might end, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of it. Human words, which were easy for him to learn. I read Remarkably Bright Creatures over the long Easter weekend and it was the perfect heart-warming book to keep me company over sunny, laid-back afternoons. "A unique and luminous book. I have nothing negative to say about this book. But other than that quibble there are plenty of smiles and Tova is a wonderful character. The characters are memorable, the storytelling is lovely (and has plenty of funny moments to balance out the sadness), and the book ends with a very satisfying wrap-up. Darkness runs through my blood. This book exceeded my expectations. I don't want to go into any greater detail, but I will tell you that all the characters and the story will tug at your heart, but at the same time make you smile. Tova mourns her only son drowned at 18. When I read the cover I was a little apprehensive. How does this story affect your relationship with the setting of where you grew up?
The connections in the coastal town of Sowell Bay don't stop at this magical one, but it is this particular bond that opens up Tova to life beyond grief and readers to a beautiful story. Marcellus' thoughts (which appear in separate chapters) are shrewd and his opinions about the humans are funny and insightful. The protagonist of the story is a veterinary student named Jacob, who is put in charge of the circus animals. Inspired by a true story, it's one a heck of an adventure, featuring a road trip transporting two giraffes across the U. S. from New York to San Diego. But in some ways, writing this book was about re-establishing that connection. Ever since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat over thirty years ago keeping busy has helped her cope. The other major character is Marcellus, a giant pacific octopus on display in the aquarium and this is the quirky part of the book, he narrates his own story.
They cannot even manage to comprehend predictable meteorological events. It was recommended by someone in my reading group so I was expecting a decent to good read, but this turned out to be just lovely. A friendship that ultimately results in both of them achieving the dreams they never admitted that they held. Firstly, I have to say that I loved Tova. If being able to see and experience the wonders of our planet and its remarkable creatures up close helps nudge folks in the direction of caring for our planet and its future, then I can't help but feel like the captivity of Marcellus, and others like him, is not in vain. Well Tova is nearly flawless, save for her stubborn refusal to accept help from her friends because she does not want to bother them. Narrated by Marin Ireland and Michael Urie, the author pulled me into the story as she introduced us to the three main characters. Van Pelt dives deeper into the tools she used to write from a unique perspective to tell this serendipitous and healing tale of human relationships. But it is really Marcellus and Tova who steal the show. They are always fun, but some can be educational, too. And for as much as they discuss it, their incredulity is... well, incredible. Author Mallery has created a delightful story of friendship between three women that also offers a variety of love stories as they fall in love, make mistakes, and figure out how to be the best—albeit still flawed—versions of themselves. It's his death that precipitates the nervous breakdown that costs Tom his job, and Savannah, almost, her life. At first you kind of wonder how Cameron's story is going to link up to Tova's and Marcellus'. There are enough traumas here to fall an average-sized mental ward, but the biggie centers around Luke, who uses the skills learned as a Navy SEAL in Vietnam to fight a guerrilla war against the installation of a nuclear power plant in Colleton and is killed by the authorities.
