Bakker has a unique way of writing and I recently found out he is also a philosopher which totally shows through his writing. August 2021 update: Sometimes you just need to re-read an old favorite. I hope he's writing those characters with something clever in mind; it's more than a little obnoxious otherwise. It stretches back thousands of years but revisits some characters nightly (more on that below) and is truly original. One who may be interested in Bakker's concept of the darkness that comes before, and what events result from that state of pre-rationality. I can't decide how I feel about this book. Overcome by guilt, and heartbroken by Esmenet's refusal to cease taking custom, Achamian flees Sumna and travels to Momemn, where the Holy War gathers under the Emperor's covetous and uneasy eyes. System is also fascinating and has so much potential, but it's also one. Kellhus's unearthly skill in battle both astounds and terrifies Cnaiür. It is, I daresay, "grimdark" - the characters all are morally grey and you may not like all of them. Bakker writes with a depth to his characterization that is staggering. Though the entire Holy War celebrates the Emperor's defeat, Kellhus is more perplexed than ever. What action there is - generally from Cnaiur's side - feels a little... unnecessary. I see a lot of DNF (did not finish) reviews for The Darkness That Comes Before stating that it was "boring" and "too slow", I totally get these points.. the start was freaking boring and so slow, I thought I was going to turn 90 before it got exciting, however it did get extremely interesting and I'm so glad I continued on with the story, I actually think I loved it by the end. Dumbfounded, Achamian confronts the howling Skeaös, only to watch horrified as his face peels apart and opens into scorched limbs …. My Suggested Readings in Fantasy. Epic fantasists don't always adequately explore the socio-political implications of their magics, often doing little more than grafting sorcery onto cultures that would be exactly the same if magic didn't exist; but Bakker has clearly given this considerable thought, and convincingly portrays not just the ways in which magic is an integral part of his society, but the ways in which that society has, necessarily, found ways to limit and control it. There are a couple of them that are very good and I have really enjoyed the interaction between certain people. The Darkness That Comes Before features an extremely complex cultural background, a multitude of characters, and a plethora of exotic names, places, terms and concepts. Cnaiur is particularly drawn to Kellhus, because Kellhus' father Moengus allegedly seduced Cnaiur's own father year ago, an act that led the latter's eventual suicide. Cnaiür urs Skiötha is a Cheiftain of the Scylvendi. If you tolerate such context and want to experience a dark grandscope epic these books are a must!
I'm not sure how much detail I can really go into about each character because I feel as though there are a lot of potential subtle spoilers that can be given, but I will highlight that my favorite POVs to follow were Achamian, Kelhus, Cnaiür, and Esemenet--which I realize is a big chunk of the perspectives. In this case the ancient evil is actually aliens who crash landed on the planet ages ago and made war with the dominant non-human civilization at the time. Epic fantasy through the prism of Nietzschian philosophy, all rendered in compelling and exquisite prose.

Writing decisions: While a bit more personal as a criteria, there are multiple things Bakker does that really appeal to me and I think lends themselves to effective Epic Fantasy writing.

We see only glimpses of them as they attempt to remain in the shadows and act as the unseen instigators behind all that occurs, but those glimpses are both tantalizing and fascinating. Almost from the outset, the gathering host is mired in politics and controversy. What does it mean for a Scylvendi to treat with outland princes, with peoples he is sworn to destroy? While there are obvious historical parallels between some nations and institutions (Catholic Church, Byzantine Empire, People's Crusade to name a few) it is not blatant and they are a very naturally part of Bakker's fantastical world. The following evening, Kellhus dines with the sorcerer, disarming him with humour, flattering him with questions. This is absolutely must read fantasy literature. When dawn arrives without any sign of Achamian, Esmenet wanders across the abandoned site, only to see him trudging toward her. This novel, while a putative fantasy, is so remarkably well-conceived and executed that it feels more like a historical recollection of a lost world. Any one of these things I could decide not to let bother me in a book I was otherwise enjoying; all of them together is getting a bit much. While never allowing his world to slip into easy parallels with Earth's history, the tale of soldiers of many kingdoms inspired to war by a messianic spiritual leader (not Kellhus, incidentally) works because of the echoes of distant crusades. The first novel in this new series is due for publication in 2009.
The intricacy of the many part plot... well, I admired it but I can't say it really did it for me. After so many years among worldborn men, Kellhus claims, Moënghus will be far too powerful for him to face alone. The premise founded here is enormous. Drasas Achamian (Aka to his friends) is very much a tortured soul. Thinking that I just needed to get through the languid marsh that was first presented before I actually got to the "real deal" that seems to be an unfortunate device used in so many other books (though not on purpose of course, or so I hope). It should be pointed out the majority of the novel is centered on setting the scene for the rest of the trilogy, to situate the reader in this finely imagined world. A sense for just how vast and intricately crafted this world is. Well, I'm glad I finally put all of that aside and gave it a go because in my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. A powerful rival of the Mandate, a School called the Scarlet Spires, has joined the Holy War to prosecute its long contest with the sorcerer-priests of the Cishaurim, who reside in Shimeh.
Secretly hope he is a villain and will conjure himself into a real person and marry hers truly). This is an extraordinarily impressive debut novel - I'd rank it above A Shadow in Summer and The Blade Itself in that regard - with a rich, detailed, and thoroughly epic world. Eventually he finds refuge in the ancient city of Atrithau, where, using his Dûnyain abilities, he assembles an expedition to cross the Sranc-infested plains of Suskara.
