Hm.... Bared to you centers around Eva Tramell, a twenty four year old woman who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Storyline concept rating: 5 stars. But even more than I liked the setting, I liked Eva, who was smart, sweet, and above all, honest with herself. The writing here is excellent. But really their idiocy crosses the normal level the night Eva tells Gideon about the sexual abuse she had to endure when she was a she becomes upset to see pity and horror in his eyes, not lust. I would have been on board with this book had Eva dropped Gideon and ordered a candlelight dinner for the roommate she had heretofore taken for granted. Eva Trammell is an extremely jealous woman who has abuse issues and finds herself deeply, sexually attracted to Gideon Cross in an elemental and, purely, raw way. It takes characters with hair-trigger reactions, non-existent impulse control and an expectation that your lover comes to you without a past to make the plot move forward. Story: Two people fucking. He looked at me with something that resembled disgust. But don't let that deter you, this book is HOT, SEXY, deeply emotional, and a serious page turner.... Not because it's poetic or lush or any of that, but because it is clean and efficient and didn't get in my way, ever. One of them was the Manhattan setting. Apart from Gideon there are two other fictional characters (male protagonist) I feel this way. Eva finds it extremely hard at times to overcome this past, but she is drawn to young, billionaire Gideon Cross as soon as she meets him. I never believed that with Grey and Ana in FSoG. Her tendency to dissolve into angry floods of tears after every dozen pages or so stops being understandable and starts being ridiculous, especially since Gideon, to his credit, is often genuinely distressed when he realises he's upset her and frequently begs her to, y'know, tell him when he does shit she doesn't like so he can stop doing it instead of having a complete meltdown and fleeing into the night like an exceptionally weepy Zorro. So, if I liked Eva so much, why did I put the book down unfinished? Bared to you gideons point of view benefits. I miss reading stories about adults.
The author gives a reason for this behavior, but it's still annoying to see characters conform to stereotypes (I also side-eyed her flamboyant gay boss).
