Saltwater was enjoyable to read but hard to get into. This quick summary seems to raise more questions than answers; but, the plot of this book is difficult to explain to those who haven't read it. "Ottessa Moshfegh, more than any other writer I can think of, is great at capturing the feelings of despondency and malaise that come with living when and how we do. It's just a series of questions. The closer case studies and some of the broader ideas for economic reform felt tangible and practical. Cumming's mother's (and grandmother's) story is one that is filled with secrets and silence. Above all, Ottessa Moshfegh is a merciless comedian of vanity and frailty. I don't think you can read this and still be comfortable staying in "the dream" as Coates calls it of white comfort. It's the emotional, real foil for statistics and histories that can feel distant. It's a lovely story of trying to get to know your family and how difficult that truly is. Moshfegh makes X's voluntary incarceration compelling and darkly funny for the first 150 pages. It speaks to Moshfegh's storytelling skills that an account of someone sleeping for a year is as gripping... This was an incredible mix of raw description and poetry. In short, she leads an incredibly enviable life.
But if you still haven't read it, do yourself a favor and dive in head first. Despite her vaunted talent, Moshfegh isn't up to the task.
