My Father's World is not. It connects to the science studies and the Bible is studied as a historical book, thus Creation to the Greeks. Originally I was leaning towards Sonlight because of all the pretty books (children's books are my Achilles heel). We also did ADV with a third grader and no regrets.
I have been intending to come to this thread... We have used P3/4, P4/5, and K (or now A), and own 1 (now B) of SL. We bought the basic package. We're kind of debating between My Father's World, and Sonlight. One popular option is to use My Father's World for elementary and then jump to Sonlight for 7th grade and up. I looked at Sonlight and bought quite a few of the Kindergarten books. I felt like with SL we skimmed topics, and they can not remember so much of what we skimmed! The living books provided are perfect for their age. MFW K, MFW 1, Adventures, ECC this year! We supplement with math and some social studies. Cons of SL: - heavy focus on history. Well, the easier part is good! Obviously this was just the impression of three or four people, nothing definitive or scientific, but I was still a little surprised by that.
They include movie ideas too!!! Sonlight has great readers so I still throw those in the book basket at times. FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE++. We all love the hands on "kid-friendly" approach! Which do you like better? Due to the elimination of the basic and deluxe package options, I have found less implied flexibility built into MFW. I can't be much help in your difficult decision, because I am there, too! So far, I've just pulled from here and there for our curriculum and haven't really found anything yet that I'm really excited about! I briefly mentioned the cost earlier but this is a huge difference, as well. THey give you so much to choose from that it is overwhelming- of course their suggestions are all so good that it is hard to leave anything out. They even had the children memorize the love chapter from the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13! I think MFW does a good job of presenting just Bible & leaving the interpretation up to the parents, so it's easy to use by folks of any doctrine. I would prefer that my children get a solid foundation in God's word and THEN start learning about other stuff, and I like how MFW integrates the Bible studies and immerses the young student with no room for confusion (again, this is my impression of it having not yet used it). MFW still had a Sonlight feel, but packages included all the essential books you will need for the year, for a 1/3 of the price of Sonlight. Too many of the books were introducing topics that I wanted to wait until 3rd or 4th grade for. The Sonlight curriculum comes with the History/Bible and Literature in one big binder, but with twins I needed to divide them so it was easier to share. Ninth Grade's history study was only Creation to the Greeks, so I assumed 10th grade would follow the family cycle and do Rome to Reformation, but I bought the 10th grade World History and Literature (which I sold without using) and it CRAMS all the history from Rome to Modern Times into one year. J know for sure I'm their fiddler curriculum for zach.
Three kids (5, 7 & 9). I'm currently using ECC. Problem is, Sonlights HEAVY history focus. I have been using MFW for 10 years, and never once used/done all the assignments in a given week. Well, don't forget (I'm so not helpful). It wasn't entirely the right level because they combine reading and writing and so you have to be at the same stage for those. My avid readers can still devour books, but I don't have to be doing all of the reading. The MFW office personnel is easily accessible. Bottom line - I love them both. You get Bible lessons that are not as uhm... random as fiar was with the "character supplement". As a curriculum it didn't work for us.
We also still read books from them, and my ds loves their readers. We loved ADV and I think you and your children will, too. We have a student going into 6th grade next year. I didn't realize back then, as a newbie homeschooler, that I could simply switch out that subject for another one. After 1st grade (or 2nd depending on ages of kids), you start a family cycle you do Bible, History, Geography, and Science together as a family, then split for more individualized age-appropriate learning in Math and Language Arts.
I did the Sand Art once by going to Michael's craft store and buying these $1 sticker sheets that you pull back, and then pour the cheap color sand on them.
