There are many policemen and women, one cannot forget, who are truly good and helpful people, who respect their duty to the community, no matter the color of anyone's skin, or their background. I give Tyler Johnson Was Here four stars, because this book tells an important and sadly all too relevant story. The pacing more than anything. And then, like Marvin, I was angry. I don't think it rushes past anything, I think the grief is handled as realistically as possible. The story itself is gripping and compelling and heartbreaking. I cried, a lot, when he was found dead. Tyler Johnson Was Here was on my TBR before it ever even got released. The writing was a little uneven at times and some of the dialogue a little rough around the edges, but this did not affect the readability of the book for me. The book makes you feel empathy and the burn of injustice. TW: police brutality, murder, violence, racism. The story follows Marvin, a boy whose twin brother, Tyler, goes to a party and never comes home. All lives means white lives.
His love for his brother was mesmerizing. With a well-written sense of grief and of empowerment shadowing the book, Coles' writing feels authentic and from-the-heart. …] White folks always make it about them, and I'm pissed off that they're trying to mask their hatred with these tags. So, I'm going to kind of mention this later, but the actual ending of the book was beautiful. Tyler Johnson Was Here--did not come to be politically correct, or racially ambiguous. Through language that honors the enraging aspects of life in the inner city, readers meet Marvin and Tyler Johnson, twin high school seniors at a crossroads. It's beautifully written, the characters are complex and their relationships are realistic. Also, Jay is a composer, musician, and missionary where he gets to mentor college students. "Exploring the current climate of police brutality and viral culture, this harrowing YA effort is based on its author's own experiences with tragedy and loss, a personal touch felt across every page.
This was a very personal story, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a realistic, emotional book about struggling through racism and police brutality. I truly adored this story because the storyline was just so enthralling. Teenagers, and adults alike will feel the pangs of Marvin's grief in ways that will shatter and change you. Which, of course, is precisely the point. Overall - it was an experience I connected with despite some qualms and general uneven presentation within the novel. I forget to breathe for a moment.
I promise to never be silent about things that matter. I have to work harder on that myself, but I found Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates (part memoir, part essay) very insightful. Their father is in jail, and Mama works extra hard to keep the family stable, leaving room for the influence of the streets to creep into their lives. People on social media keep throwing around hashtags and advocate for Tyler's justice, while many others call him a "thug" and said that he deserved to die. Until the world, truly understands that black lives matter--not specifically because we/they are black but in spite of it. Marvin tries his best to talk some sense into Tyler's head about not getting caught up in a world that he barely seems ready to become involved with. But still, they fell a bit flat for me in comparison to Marvin, who we got a great feel for! There are a couple of instances where a parent threatens physical punishment toward their child. Overall, I loved this book and I am so glad I read it. It all makes me so very angry, but I'm not surprised anymore. This is the story of Tyler being murdered by a police officer simply because he's black. Fight to remind yourself that you do matter. You know what that means, boy?
The talk Tyler and Marvin's mother has with her boys in this book, about keeping their heads down, about watching out for the police, is one my parents never had to have with my sisters or with me, and I realize how privileged we are for this. When they have an encounter with an officer in the beginning, he watches his twin become increasingly distant and he worries. Now y'all already know that I love reading books about social justice, and that's exactly what this book was. We live in the world where scenarios like these are being so common and it's just not enough to like and share a post. Sometimes it's hard to hear people tell us to stay strong. Nonetheless, it was an amazing and important read and I am thankful to have read it. I think I finished reading it in about 2 hours, which is quick for a novel of this length for me, and a big part of that is definitely to do with the pacing. She starts out affiliated with Johntae (the gang member Tyler started hanging around) and Marvin goes to her for help, she at first refuses, but his persistency causes her to get more involved.
