The romance between Hades and Persephone comes to fruition through a combination of choice and fate, and I hope to see those themes explored more in the next book of the series, especially as Persephone's growth as a character independent of her relationship with Hades continues. But when they eventually come together, the whole relationship is very passionate. Hades doesn't get a lot of development in this first novel, though there is certainly a lot of depth afforded to him.
This book made no sense to me, it lacked of sense, plot, personality for the characters and many more things. Strong character development? Persephone is even worse, wildly jumping to conclusions like it's an Olympic sport and refusing to listen to a whole sentence from Hades so that he might explain anything. Like in the beginning when she just kept going to the Hades' club for seemingly no reason at all? Hecate explaining to Persephone that she bought life to the Underworld and within Hades was just…odd. You're probably peeking at us through the shutters now, Ilish, hiding like a woman. I really wanted to know more about her mother, and how she met her father... which is the whole reason Kyra have such cool abilities... What comes so naturally for June came at tremendous costs for Pearl. Really enjoyed learning about her family, and Kyra learning about the power that she has-and how to use it!
It is natural to compare your children. I will admit that when I read the first book in this series "Midnight Thief" I wasn't overly impressed. As a result, I think Daughter of Dusk has a more mature and overall darker vibe, especially when the plot drives Kyra to do some rather unsavory things. For example, Pearl used a wheelchair, then a walker, then ankle braces to learn how to walk. I may have felt this way due to the fact that for some reason I thought this was going to be a trilogy where in fact it is actually a dualogy. There isn't a ton of romance in the story, but the little interaction between these two was done perfectly. Torn between two worlds, Kyra now must decide how far she is willing to go to save Forge and prepare for the biggest battle of her life. This is unhelpful and dumb and we should stop doing it. "You've not given me away, " she said. Kyra has a lot more at stake than she did in the previous book. What's important now is to make your face relax, to pour a little cold water over your feelings, to appear friendly and conciliatory, to play the planned role well. Everything about this time around was vastly different. "There's only one point to discuss, and that's your daughter. Everything is rather TELL, and not SHOW.

Riordan turned to children's fiction when he started The Lightning Thief as a bedtime story for his oldest son. Granted, I wasn't in love head over hills with Midnight Thief but I had still enjoyed it very much and had bought the hardcover and was looking forward to the 2nd book.
