Under the Silver Lake is the third feature by David Robert Mitchell, following the utterly delightful teen relationship rondelay, The Myth of the American Sleepover, and the existential horror-chiller, It Follows. Nonetheless, even if the movie adds up to less than the sum of its too numerous parts, individual scenes are transfixing, among them a moonlight swim that turns deadly in the Silver Lake Reservoir. The rest of the film follows Sam as he tries to find out what happened to Sarah. One day he spies at the pool a new neighbour, Riley Keough's Sarah; blonde in a white bikini, she instantly grabs Sam's attention. Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment's swimming pool. Sam is obsessed with a local free fanzine where a comic artist details his struggles and some awful secret which is where the film takes its title from. Andrew Garfield stars opposite Keough, in a Los Angeles-set thriller in which Garfield searches "for the truth behind the mysterious crimes, murders and disappearances in his East L. A. neighborhood. " I look forward to David Robert Mitchell's next offering. Hold on just a second. Andrew Garfield plays a guy who has a sexy neighbour (played by Riley Keough) who he almost hooks up with one night but they promise to see each other again the next day.
There's no denying that David Robert Mitchell has created a divisive LA odyssey. The next thing I thought was that it's a shame most people won't bother watching it or won't appreciate it if they do. Sam meets an out of work actress in a club and they dance to "What's the frequency Kenneth" by REM, Generation X's anthem of malaise still relevant even now. At the center of all of this is Sam (Andrew Garfield), who is about to be evicted from his grimy one-bedroom apartment for grossly overdue rent but doesn't seem terribly motivated to do anything about it. When he catches some kids on the street keying cars – including his own, scratching a giant penis on the bonnet – he beats them up savagely and kicks them when they're down. Now he's back with a risky, sprawling Marmite movie in the shape of Under the Silver Lake. But, while I didn't enjoy Under the Silver Lake and overall found it annoying, maybe I could be persuaded that it is a failed film by an ambitious and promising young filmmaker (although I have just noticed that Mitchell isn't that young) – maybe if I watch other films directed by Mitchell and find interests I will be able to convince myself that Under the Silver Lake was an honourable failure, rather than just an annoying failure.
No one really cares how many movies you've seen. Ambitious is the first word I thought of after watching this. This Silver Lake might be holding secrets. And he begins to search for her, and things become even stranger, when she is supposedly someone killed in a car crash with a billionaire philanthropist (and, apparently, bigamist). The over-abundance of female nudity is clearly trying to make a point but it ends up being guilty of the issues it's lightly touching on. Sam is a procrastinator who's about to get evicted from his flat in LA.
The three girls who take Sam to the Songwriter's mansion are all escorts, and these three girls hang in the same circle of friends like Sarah, her roommates, and the girls Sam follows. He gives off strong Elliott Gould vibes from The Long Goodbye as a worn out guy just trying to survive and complete the task. Apart from the inclusion of codes, what does it all mean? Of course the film wants you to know this, to exist in his bubble, and he's such a dick!, but even on those terms it's inadequate. It would then venture back the way it came with its prize. There is humour, amongst all the allusion. As Steph writes in what's without a doubt the best review of this film, "the movie isn't about a guy finding himself at dead ends, it's about a guy walking in straight lines and getting direct answers to questions he asks directly to people's faces".
The ending stayed with me for quite some time, which is probably the greatest endorsement i could make about it.
