Trick or Treat is the fourth book in the Corinna Chapman series by award-winning Australian author, Kerry Greenwood. A new cut price bakery has opened around the corner and her sales are damaged. Corinna is shocked to be closed down by the Health Department while the source of a nasty poison is sought. There is an epidemic of madness in the streets of Melbourne thought to be related to a new drug or poison. If you aren't reading these, you should be. Or will this be the end for the Earthly Delights Bakery? Equally dismaying is the news that delectable Daniel has a gorgeous guest who seems to have her eye on both Corinna's man and her shop. Corinna also has to deal with competition from a new bakery chain Best Fresh, the gathering of witches for their celebrations and lost jewish Greek treasure from the war. She is also the unpaid curator of seven thousand books, three cats (Attila, Belladonna and Ashe) and a computer called Apple (which squeaks). I love the cooking, the baking, all those quaint descriptive passages. I would long remember the scene: Jason propped up and wheezing, holding Pumpkin Bear in one arm, and listening with awe to the story of Odysseus and Circe. Too unbelievable, too many stories which don't gel with each other - poisoning witches AND Nazi / Greek treasure?? I have another one in the series to read and hope it is much more marvellous. If there is another novel out there that combines Wiccan rituals with recovered stolen Nazi treasure, I'd be interested to hear about it. Usually, it's wise to eat before reading, but this time there is a lot less mention of delicious breads, muffins and other mouth-watering food to stimulate the appetite.... Let's hope that #5 Forbidden Fruit will return that to us. Any loose end that Jason might find himself in is soon reined in by tasks that the residents of Insula assign him. Too many characters, too many stories, not enough plot. Fun and funky characters, witches, food porn, a stolen Nazi treasure horde surfacing unexpectedly - who wouldn't want to be Corinna Chapman? Highly recommended, as is the rest of the series! Charming, quirky and fun. Nero Wolfe would have approved of that. But the food is reliably as good as ever. Kerry has written thirteen books in this series with no sign yet of Miss Fisher hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. The usual quirky cast of characters with some nutcases thrown in. This is just as enjoyable a read second time around. That being said, I am not sure it fits that well in Corinna's world. Trick or treat r34 by oughta jordan. Would Corinna's loyal customers continue to frequent Earthly Delights or would she find herself struggling to make ends meet? Poirot would have shaken his head at these amateurs whose genius could obviously not rival his own. But you aren't given a foggy clue whodunit but at the end Corrina figures it out.
Grossed me out so I couldn't focus on the rest of the story. The books do build on each other, so best to go back to Earthly Delights. These books are positive and involved yet somehow very relaxing and promote community. I want to live in Insula (Corinna's apartment building) with all her varied, charming and eccentric neighbours. The cheaper prices were obviously ones she couldn't meet – but her quality was far superior. If she'd at least provided Jason's chocolate orgasm muffin recipe, I might have gone up a star. She can't handle it all. The ending fits together too convieniently and in a rather forced way. She would undoubtedly find some suitable refreshment for the aliens--a little more methyl mercaptan in that, my dears? To add to the trouble, Meroe, Wicca friend to all at their residence of Insula was tormented by an upcoming event which boded no good. The recipes at the back of the book look delicious and worth a try! Yay for fat heroines!
The 'internet' scene with the 'nerds' is extremely outdated. There was one part that lost me. Get help and learn more about the design. So the entire thing is ridiculous. Really, now that I think of it, I don't know that that part of the plot actually holds together - but the rest of it does, and anyway I enjoyed the ride, as always. Jealousy momentarily flares. This is another great story in the Corinna Chapman series. But I love her character and the side characters so much that I didn't really mind. I had like this better if it wasn't a mystery. 300 pages, Mass Market Paperback. They should try adolescents. In the Corinna Chapman series she paints a picture of Melbourne that has me wanting to visit and in particular the streets Ms Greenwood writes about. I usually love these books, but this one seemed a bit off to me.
It is a delightful mix of mystery and intrigue, food (lots of it! ) On a more serious note, this mystery made me realize that I know shamefully little about the Nazi occupation of Greece. It looked promising at the beginning but just got boring halfway through. And with a shocking suddenness, the Health Department was investigating Earthly Delights – what was going on? Strange singing seems to herald the discovery of a series of victims of a hallucinatory substance doing the rounds. I love Greenwood's work. I love Corinna Chapman, her SO Daniel, her apprentice Jason, and her neighbors and friends in her apartment building. She needed answers – and fast! You have to love Corrina, Jason, Daniel and the rest of the crew.
Probably my favourite of the series with a solid mystery or three, and much less formal style than the others. Poor Corinna has some competition from a "chain" called "Best Fresh" but they are having huge problems. I love the Phryne Fisher series and was thrilled to find this series by the same author. But I also just didn't enjoy it as much -- it felt overwrought, too many threads. The Phryne Fisher series (pronounced Fry-knee, to rhyme with briny) began in 1989 with Cocaine Blues which was a great success. Yet another entertaining and enjoyable Corinna Chapman novel. Not to mention that Daniel has a gorgeous female friend visiting and that is not making Corinna feel so great.
