If He Had Been With Me tells the story of Autumn, a teenage girl in a committed relationship with one person but still torn by her feelings for her childhood friend, Finn. I really have all positive things to say about this book EXCEPT for the ending. I keep thinking about the miscommunication between them, the love Finn always had for Autumn, and how neither of them knew what the other truly meant to them. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk. It grew with every new longing of my body and desire until there was not a piece of me that did not love him. Not sure how I feel but even though I hate the trope, I can't bring myself to care much since this is a stand-alone. This has been a roller coaster of emotions for me, I mean, literally. So since it's apparently hard to put down (it's really easy to read), why do I only want to rate this 2 stars? Maybe even a box of tissues. The overarching love story between Autumn, Jamie and Finn had me turning every page because I wasn't sure who I was rooting for. I had such high expectations for this one.
This book was beautifully written and I could not put it down. I do have to say that the beginning was slow. But then something changed. She remembers the night in middle grade when Finny kissed her, when she didn't know what to do and they grew apart. But it's also the kind where it's not even a complete sob? So what are you waiting for? Listen… I might change my rating later because I have such conflicting feelings about this book. The author soundly explores the relationship dynamics between childhood friends going through the transition of dealing with hormones and feelings they've never experienced, to the delicate beginnings of love. I remember sobbing so hard for days because tumblr had spoiled me the ending and now? I'm rating my own book five stars. Autumn tells the readers what happened, the events of 'Before', when she and Finny were inseparable and the events leading up to the accident. It's a story which deals with issues of friendship, first loves and family in the most raw and intense way I have come across in a long time. This book had no disposable or pointless characters.

And for the most part, the book was exactly what I expected it to be. And this book differs from other YA books as it spans over three years of Autumn's life (told in the present, but it also encapsulated much more than that with memories and flashbacks). She and her friend- Sasha- are excluded all of a sudden. Hence, reading it in one day/one sitting. Nowlin's top-notch character development didn't stop with just Autumn and Finny. If I had felt anything. By page 80 I had already counted 4 instances where "I" was used when it should have been "me. " For me, her story was more coming of age and it was shown really well. It also has a more literary feel at times, perhaps because Autumn is a writer, and the way Nowlin meshes foreshadowing with Autumn's own quirks is a unique, captivating blend.
I audibly went "are you fucking kidding. " The other main theme is "what if". Naturally, Autumn and Finny grew up together. Towards the middle, the romance began and Laura Nowlin began wanting to make us choose sides- Jamie or Finn. I have a new absolute favourite book, so much passages bookmarked. Yes, it was painful, but i really didn't like the open ending. Just when you think you've had enough the few chapters after that hit you harder. He's blonde, gorgeous, and a complete gentleman. It took a while for the plot to begin zooming up a hill (I always refer to roller coasters everyone) but it somewhat wasn't boring and I had no thoughts of wanting to put the book down. I think it changes the reading experience (luckily, I did not read the blurb on that site - which is also used on most bloggers review posts, amazon, etc - and only read the back cover of the book).
