The correct size is very close to a 3/8 inch drive without a socket on it. I was going to torch it but I gotta get some propane, I have mapp gas but I don't know the melting point for alluminum is and I know mapp is hot, I dont feel like re-threading a rear diff.
Perhaps you could just get the cover from the junkyard and experiment with this prior to removing yours.
