But if your child likes hands on activities, and you want to be a "relaxed homeschooler, " MFW is the way to go. I think MFW does a good job of presenting just Bible & leaving the interpretation up to the parents, so it's easy to use by folks of any doctrine. But we basically did just the history, read-alouds and some readers. I used Sonlight for 10 years before switching to MFW. I like that's it all in one manual.
I still highly recommend it for K-8th, but our experience with My Father's World 9th grade curriculum pushed me to finally move to Sonlight for High School! They provide complete homeschool curriculum packages and individual resources and materials so you can build the preschool or K-12 homeschool curriculum that best meets your family's needs. I also firmly believe you are never ever too old for a well done non-fiction picture book, or a good historical fiction. We also still read books from them, and my ds loves their readers. If you have more than one child in 2nd to 8th grade, this is a HUGE SELLER. All you need to add (in most sets) is Language Arts and Math (they offer their own to add on, or you can purchase whatever brand you want separately. Is MFW on social media? I have been using MFW for 10 years, and never once used/done all the assignments in a given week. For example, in MFW1 I would read a Bible story, then my ds would read the Bible story from the Bible reader, narrate it to me, summarize it in his Bible notebook, draw a picture of the story, and put the time-line figure on the time-line. Too many good books, too much time, too much money. Oh, and what about that comment that gets said so often about My Father's World? Teachers manual is soooo easy to use and not gigantic!!! He questioned how it could be a Christian program if it didn't start with creation. I'm sure you have looked at samples of both but to add my two cents: Sonlight is a LOT of reading aloud. But because we already read those subjects aloud, I am wondering how much read aloud time would be lost by doing this geography study rather than a history study. We have no regrets in using MFW. Tried neither but trying to figure out what to use next year:popcorn. I can't be much help in your difficult decision, because I am there, too! We had tried SL in second and ended up sending it back after just a few weeks. My kids were frustrated with all the reading aloud I had to do and resented the sitting still they had to do!
I often (still) purchase books from them. And it has notebooking! I really do believe that it was a Godsend for our family! For us, the whole program was just too much. I could work ahead on days when things went very well, and only do a few things on days when we were too busy with everything else in our home, but catch up easily on anouther day when all went well.
