Maybe not openly queer characters, but certainly queer-coded friendships and furtive, lovelorn glances (and who among us could provide a heterosexual explanation for "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you"). Author Shannon doesn't explicitly go into race, but she does mention dark hair on women multiple times. I think the weakest part of this is not getting a feel for the size of the world. 'An epic fantasy destined to be a classic. I cannot believe more people aren't talking about this book. Almost five centuries before the events of The Priory of the Orange Tree, it is the time of the Grief of Ages or the Great Sorrow. Tané's country is clearly isolationist Japan, Sabran's island is England, another country is the Netherlands, and the Priory reads as a Garden of Eden. My heart aches for her at times because I believe she is doing her best and when things go wrong, she deeply feels she deserves it. Samantha Shannon's "Priory of the Orange Tree" combines many elements of large fantasy world-building as well as inserting plots driven by a political motive. And in the East, the great dragons that helped defeat the wyrms the first time they arose have been sleeping for over 200 years. Fantasy is a particularly queer genre, as it bends and breaks the rules of our world and creates new visions of what the world could be. Don't be put off by the weight of this book.
What are you waiting for Slackers! ANother fantastic start to a fantasy series, this book is gorgeous and compelling. For just the price of a cup of coffee, you can help me continue to bring you the content you love. However, I did find it really interesting that we learn from Ead that the history of the Queendom is different where she is from and that the First Queen is seen as a warrior there not a damsel in distress. And not just women, but queer women and women of color. It's not a big thing.
However, the Prioress won't let her take the jewel in case it falls into the witch's hands as she has been separated from the orange tree for a long time but she doesn't feel right leaving it behind but has no choice. While it's usually recommended to kill your darlings and cut out anything non-essential, this isn't meant to be so extreme. We soon learn that Fyredel, one of the High Western dragons and the right hand of the Nameless One, who seems to be the main antagonist has awoken from his 1000 year slumber and the others are waking too, meaning the Queendom is in serious danger. I mean humans and dragons still exist so it's not like there will not be conflict in the future. As she works to get her business off the ground, she meets a delightful cast of characters who become her best friends (and one succubus woman who might be something more). I say find, because I'd rarely seen any advertised. 'I have been waiting my whole life for this fantasy. Finally, let me just say that its very rare to find a book that represents diversity in such an unobtrusive and casual way. Book like these are an experience. Tané is a skilled warrior. Not only that, but all of the background characters are thoroughly fleshed out. Samantha Shannon has become one of the authors whose future works I will watch out for.
But the book that it is is still an achievement I'm very happy to recommend. Maybe I'm just a lame, grumpy reader who will remain flabbergasted. I don't have a review for this one yet but it is in the same genre/vein as MDZS. I devoured this part of the story and eagerly imagined recommending the book to all the fantasy readers I know. It was so nice to see myself represented in the kind of fantasy story I loved growing up. A world crafted with such intricacy and detail, I had to remind myself it was not a real place. Despite a few minor issues, I still found this book to be incredible. For years I told people I only liked books with male main characters because I didn't realize that women could be written well. He also agrees to try and help Tane regain her position as a dragon rider because of the courage and determination she showed in retrieving her dragon at the risk to her own life. It leaves as quickly as it comes. The BookTok girlies will come for me if I don't mention this book, since it's the go-to sapphic fantasy recommendation. An avid reader of fantasy, it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I realized the lack of female written adult fantasy. And, of course, it's all life-and-death. I remember seeing this book showcased maybe once or twice on my TikTok and subtly displayed at Barnes & Noble, but from what I have seen, this book has touched so many people so I think that we all need to do our due diligence and place this book back into the public spotlight.
Who is Sabran's female ancestor? If you want a fantasy novel to break from trilogies (or longer) than I highly recommend this book. Ead doesn't like this as she is finally gaining the Queen's trust and asks Chassar to see if the new Prioress will let her stay at the court at least until Sabran bears a daughter. We also bounce between Kit and Loth arrives in Yscalin where they are planning a dangerous game as they have to face the draconic plague as well as the ruthless court that may just kill them outright as well as Tane who has begun her training in earnest to become a dragon rider and I think Tane's parts so far are my favourite but I am struggling with how dense the novel is, I have been reading for 3-4 hours now I am only around 150 pages in because there is so much to take in. Samantha Shannon, Priory Of The Orange Tree. I have a feeling that Sabran, Ead and Tane's storyline are all going to collide very soon especially when the Nameless One actually awakens. It allows us to interact with books in a very intentional, emotional way. While dragons in the west are fire-breathing monsters, dragons in the east are wise creatures affiliated with water and air, protectors and partners to humankind.
