The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree is inspired by The Dark Tower series from Stephen King. Overall, this is definitely an above-average first novel, though for me it has some (non-fatal) issues. As the book opened, I was so pissed for how his wife treated him that I fell right in love with Ross. I really had no idea what I was getting into when I started.
Sermon for Sunday, May 5th, 2019. In some ways, I think Whirlwind is better, but I'm not going to do a comparison here. There few a few parts that bored me, but overall the story was VERY solid. I understand why authors don't want the Christian religion in their books, but if you're going to take it out, take it all out. I don't think you do fit them together. Sentence after sentence of adjectives and metaphors, in an effort to sound sophisticated or talented as a writer. His ability to drop wee descriptions into a sentence that pop the story to life is uncanny. Unfortunately, too, the words don't always mean what he seems to think they mean, and occasionally mean the opposite. I'll be reading the next installment. Dearly departed Dad was a famous fantasy novelist, and the 300 fans that show up for the funeral demand that Ross finish... Each verse includes a link to the chapter and verse of the book where it is found in the bible.
My complaints are meager. We've corresponded about some questions I had (which he cleared up, so they won't appear in this review), and I'll be sending him some more notes too. Personally, if I had to, I'd reconcile the pieces by pointing to the prophets and the Psalms, where the language of judgment is reserved for those exploiting and harming the anawim, the vulnerable ones. So, if you're in the mood for an enjoyable read that expands your mind a bit, I'd definitely recommend this book. Or disappear into the potter's ground?
I can't tell you where I am, but it's possibly one of London's best known and most treasured restaurants. I can't wait for the sequel!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't that happy with the worldbuilding. To conclude, let me say that if you are a fan of the Dark Tower series, or any weird westerns, or inter-dimensional travel, then you should definitely give this a try. The effect of his father's writing was a different story altogether. However, in a genre like fantasy, I'm not overly quick to begrudge folks for a bit of "been there, done that", being as there's only *so many* ideas to go with, and after a while everything gets a bit incestuous. Malus Domestica was my introduction to Hunts work. The world-building is astounding. Today's masterpiece is the ONLY book I have reviewed that I can honestly say deserves a five-star rating. Most fantasies are set in a quasi-medieval landscape, but Hunt has chosen a deliciously different canvas: the Wild West. Ross, who is dependent on Sawyer and Noreen's version of the fantasy series, finds himself in another fantastical world, where there are people alright, but they have their own version of events, weapons, and creatures. I'd sit there flipping the meat and reading and discussing various subjects with Dad, he asked what I was so engrossed in and I kinda sketched out the plot.
I quite liked the first book in this series, and must say, this one is better. That's not to say that nothing happens, by any means, but there's more a sense of beginning at the end than there is a sense of ending, if that makes any sense. The story description sounded interesting enough, especially considering the price. Those hopes were obliterated. Without saying too much, I have been making a lot of pasties and pretty much turned my tiny kitchen into a full scale bakery just like the good old days. And I looked, and behold, a pale horse. That much, he can handle. Soon after, he began thinking of using the line in a story--a poem perhaps--and he continued to seek out accompanying images in scriptures. When the Man Comes Around. From award-winning author S. A. I did not find it as brilliant as I thought it would be, going by the first part.
It describes the fall of the angels (watchers), visions of heaven and hell and the birth of Noah. The hairs on your arm will stand up. I was not ready for this one to end when it did. Destin is basically a mashup of classic swords-and-sorcery fantasy with the Old West, and the two elements don't blend well. This author is truly gifted. I enjoyed the characters and a lot of the unique ideas. I'm behind on too many right now!! I'm a wee bit torn on this rating, that's for sure! The grand stage on which Whirlwind is told; the connecting tissue by which all stories are bound together.
