'The Melancholy Hussar of the German Legion' is much more than a love story, despite the central theme of Phyllis and Matthäus' tragic love story. This story has a lot of bitter irony about some of the events that make it sad and unhappy, an example of this is when Hardy uses coincidence, bad luck, fate, and chance to the story. Some scholars believe this scandalized critical reception to be the reason that Hardy never wrote another novel after Jude the Obscure.

This short story involves a young girl, Phyllis Grove, who is promised in marriage to a man who then vanishes until he reappears much later only to wreck her hopes of happiness with Matthaüs, a Hussar of the German legion she had meanwhile fallen in love with.
