Remarkably Bright Creatures not only has that unique imagined animal perspective developed by the author, but brilliant storytelling that evokes emotion – from tears to laughter. Seventy-year-old Tova Sullivan works the nightshift as a cleaner at Sowell Bay Aquarium. And those that have read A Man Called Ove, please do read this as its a similar heartwarming theme. I've known people like Cameron and I find that they never gain respect or understanding—there's never that "aha" moment for arrogant people, and that's exactly what Cameron is.

A giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, to be precise, and he is that—the novel opens with the first of several short chapters narrated in the first person (unlike the rest of the book) by the octopus himself, who can, as he points out, do many things we don't know he can do. Tova's teenage son went missing many years ago and recently she lost her husband. He finds a job at the aquarium where he meets Tova, and at this point in the story I began to suspect how it might end, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of it. Marcellus takes us on a journey through the weary mind of an old animal captive behind glass that looks out upon the effects of the human condition, in and out of the walls of the aquarium.
As Van Pelt's zippy, fun-to-follow prose engages at every turn, readers will find themselves rooting for the many characters, hoping that they'll find whatever it is they seek. Marcellus' voice is my favorite, as his intelligence is underestimated by most humans, and you can hear his laugh at this in his witty, snarky thoughts. It's their little secret and the beginning of their unlikely friendship. And a whole host of debut authors also came out with stellar reads that will leave you hungry for their next one before you reach the last page. I think Marcellus is profoundly lonely, perhaps more so than any other character in the book. I want to know more about the people who live in this small seaside town, especially the heroine and her grandson. Heart-warming narrators.
