Despite the hardships of COVID and virtual schooling, Lenoir County students demonstrated their abilities to compete and win competitions about the importance of soil and water conservation. Without soil and water, we would not be here. One of the best ways to conserve soil and water would be to prevent pollution. The Resource Conservation Workshop is a week long workshop for high school students and involves study and hands on participation in a wide range of conservation topics. Choosing native plants that are adapted to regional rainfall and soil moisture content is a great way to conserve this precious resource. The meetings are open to the public and a notice of the meetings is posted on the outer doors and the bulletin board of the Richmond County Agricultural Center Building. The N. C. Mark Chhim, a 6th grade student from Ledford Middle School, and Zachary Spease, a 6th grade student from Oak Grove Middle School whose poster and essay were both selected as the Davidson County 1st place winners. Students submitted posters and speeches based on this theme. The purpose of the contests is to educate students about issues that affect our land and water sources. The competition begins at the District level.
