The magical realism aspect of this book was done in a way that I found to be believable and made for a great story. The duo are both driven back to town due to similar circumstances — death. The tree keepers, black as twilight…came from overseas a century ago, drawn to a small southern town. I first learned about Midnight at the Blackbird Café when the Speculative Chic editor tagged me in a Facebook post about the book. Following them come the reporters. Wouldn't it be fun to just eat a little pie and get to hear a message from a deceased love one?
This book is like a Hallmark movie with a dash of sorrow and grief thrown in to make it a bit more deep. While the Lindens and the Callows could not be more different, both familial lines share a passion for healing. I've made lemon meringue pies and tarts, but I haven't really made what I imagine an American style pie to be. This book had a whole lot of realism but mainly was a good old-fashioned book. This is very much a character novel though. Plot Structure and Development: 4 Stars. Every smiley moon, without fail, Claire dreamed of her childhood.
This year's pick kept popping up in our club as one of our members' favorite reads from last year, so it was the perfect choice for summer with that sweet blueberry tart on the cover. Or do you stand by the decision? There was "a stone-cold silence" in place of smiles, hugs and kisses. I found myself struggling through the book, not feeling the depth of character or the flow as interesting enough to keep me pulled in. This was the perfect feel good book to read at this time. Add the pineapple, banana, extra light olive oil and egg and stir until well combined. Everyone talks about it and it's a "big thing", sort of, in the background of the book, but the ones that seem like they maybe should eat it (of course) do not eat it. As always, Martha Storm was primed for action. A long time ago, while living in Wicklow, something very tragic happened to her mother and she left Wicklow never to go back. Much like the living and breathing blackbirds in the tree for birdwatchers, the existence of the pie is the opportunity to witness magic. The main character gets a chance to run a bakery/café? This is one of them. Only a guardian, a woman of Zee's lineage, can make these pies. What I loved most about the pie and the mysterious nature of its magic is what it symbolizes for the residents. This phenomenon led to an unusual amount of bird watchers and tourists arriving in Wicklow. In the end though, I have decided to make Hummingbird Cake, because it is a Southern classic, and because I really wanted to make something with cream cheese frosting. It is what I would consider a "happy" book. What a happy fun story! Natalie was never sure if her husband's drowning had been an accident or suicide. Suspense - the most suspenseful thing in this book was wondering what happened to Mr. Lazenby's lady friend. In many ways it isn't much deeper though. There are those in the Linden family who blame Eden for AJ's death and they are unforgiving. Add the icing sugar and beat until well combined. There's also this blackbird pie everyone is talking about.

Who would you like to be friends with? Finding love made sense for Natalie's character development but did not seem necessary for Anna Kate. Techosky's reading is cringey, too — women get the falsetto treatment. I really loved the elements of her writing about the cafe with all of its delicious dishes. I am not always a fan of magic realism, but in some cases it works. Anna Kate believes in her family legacy.
The pie played practically no part in how Anna Kate or Natalie handled anything in their lives. I do want to move to the magic town where wonderful boyfriends are growing on trees. There, a passageway is marked with large twin trees. The story centers around Anna Kate whose grandmother, Zee, just passed away. I didn't think that this aspect ever became too much, but was cute and tied in with some of the heavier themes in the book.
