The Irish Repertory Theatre in Manhattan is currently staging an adaptation of Synge's The Aran Islands. A book for the lover of Irish culture. Now it's our turn to enjoy it via this charming production from the Adelaide Repertory Theatre. In 1901, Synge wrote his first play, When the Moon Has Set, a full-length drama which he later condensed into one act. The remarkable thing about Synge, who many consider Ireland's greatest playwright, is his literary reputation rests almost entirely on six plays written and produced during the last six years of his life. Margaret Nolan has designed a rather unattractive set dominated by carefully draped pieces of distressed fabric, a rather abstract look that perhaps is meant to conjure fishermen's nets. It was something I couldn't quite forgive him for, the absence of any kind of political economy in his understanding, the fact that the villagers were so poor because they lived on land that barely provided subsistence -- their ingenious ways of extracting every last possible use from it are incredible -- yet still was land owned by someone else, for which they had to pay rent in coin. Synge's third play of that fertile summer, The Tinker's Wedding, became the least distinguished of his mature works. On his first visit he meets a blind man who believes in the "superiority of his stories over all other stories in the world". He does admire their skill with the boats but he spends so much time with old men who tell tales that have no point that it's easy to think the whole island lives and thinks as these old men do.
She is a classic Foote survivor -- cut off from a father who doesn't approve of her marriage, struggling to make ends meet, and traveling toward a highly uncertain future, accompanied only by her little daughter, Margaret Rose. He listened to the speech of the islanders, a musical, old-fashioned, Irish-flavored dialect of English. Watch out for pop-up performances. Played by Conor Proft (CFA'17), Billy, whose parents have both drowned, has dreams of his own, ignited by the frenzy surrounding the film. As Slim, a widower with a secret who falls precipitously for Georgette, Larry Bull does solid work, but very few sparks are struck between him and Lichty. By today's standards it is outrageously so, but it's a revealing window into a time when it was accepted practice to belittle people who were different, to use them as the butt of cheap jokes, give them names that reminded them of their difference (eg Cripple Billy), and be quite brutally ignorant in their treatment of them. About this he said, merely, "You should read it. " In it, Synge (who is best known for his scandalous comedy The Playboy of the Western World) breathlessly records how the locals still speak Gaelic, long after the mainland had capitulated to English. This may be an old-fashioned kind of entertainment but it is beautifully produced and delivered and shines a light on the heart and soul of the folk of the Aran Islands 120 years ago.

In my experience, the one case of a prose piece being successfully adapted into a solo show was Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, but that was a closely argued essay that created its own sense of drama. ) Something went try again later. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre, the Irish Rep's black box space. Presumably, if they had known Synge was listening, the servants would have spoken a more "correct" English; therefore, eavesdropping enabled him to hear their spontaneous cadences. Through McDonagh's unsparing eyes, life for the tiny population of Inishmaan is petty and harsh, and its currency is lies. An ironic comedy set in Wicklow, its plot is based on a story Synge first heard on the Aran Islands and narrated in his book The Aran Islands. His often surprisingly grisly, yet tender works just scratch an itch in my brain I cannot place. Hard to say, but at least in Austin Pendleton's production, The Traveling Lady emerges as a distinctly minor offering in his rich body of work. The Aran Islands records the day-to-day lives of Irish peasants living in small fishing communities on one of the most rugged and windswept islands in the world.

I couldn't help but imagine Synge, a man who had studied in France and been to Germany, sitting and writing impassively while the people of Inis Meáin suffered after having been dispossessed of the island that they had lived for generations on. The Aran Islands was a fascinating read, and led to very interesting research following on John Millington Synge and the sociopolitical scene at this time in Ireland.
William Butler Yeats encourage Synge to go to the Aran Islands, to listen to the voices, hear the stories, live among the people. Early in 1906, Synge was traveling with the Irish National Theatre Society when he fell in love with one of the actresses, Molly Allgood (stage name Maire O'Neill), who was 15 years his junior and had only a grade-school education. Theatre in Review: The Traveling Lady (Cherry Lane Theatre)/The Aran Islands (Irish Rep Theatre). The Aran Islands, now at the Irish Rep, is more a travelogue with a fancy literary pedigree. Taken along with Conroy's predictable cadence, it all makes for a superb sleep aid. Many of these experiences, be it the grieving at a funeral or the coming together of a community to display their loyalty to an individual, would find their way into Synge's plays and are easily recognizable to audiences familiar with those works. Farrell and Gleeson both give excellent performances in the film, making their characters both annoyingly stubborn and sickeningly sweet. The way they hold funerals is quite interesting: lamenting (keening) is practiced, and sometimes also hitting the casket in some kind of rhythm happens. Farrell is also reason enough. But they're not important, not really. And just when you think he can't take it anymore he bounces back to assert his dignity and teach his peers something about sensitivity and the wider world. Somehow, though, her sorrows don't register as strongly as they should. The pages are soft and delicate and the prose is simple and beautiful. I know that Synge is very important, but I could not really appreciate his genius in this work.
A haunting and evocative experience awaits viewers of "The Aran Islands: A Performance on Screen, " made possible by New York's Irish Repertory Theatre, which first presented a stage version of the work in association with Co-Motion Media in 2017.
