This is a book I would recommend if someone wants an easy to consume sapphic fantasy world without getting emotionally attached to the characters. There was lots of humour that did actually make me laugh/smile at times (and then despair of myself in the case of some of the puns). Reyna is repeatedly referred to as 'the ex-guard' even when her former profession has zero bearing on the current scene, and this is one of those things that once I notice an author does it, I can't stop noticing it. ) It's a world with swords and dragons and griffons, but the fantasy? Still, I did read the whole thing, and would be willing to recommend it (with caveats) to cozy fantasy fans who are more into *vibes* than a tightly-written and well-paced plot, provided you also aren't as wildly uncomfortable with ass-smacking in the workplace as I am. And so, so, so, so sweet. The emergence of cosy queer fantasy is my favourite thing about the publishing industry at the moment, and this book included all the reasons why: glorious storytelling and world building, a healthy, joyful romance between two strong-willed, powerful women from different worlds, and an atmosphere I desperately wanted to be part of, if only to sip my tea and watch everyone fall in love. I definitely liked this latest addition to the cosy fantasy genre. The setting is solid, the romance feels real, and the magic system with its mystical creatures are filled with whimsy and familiarity. Also maybe not on the job at your cute and quirky tea shop in front of all your customers and your teenage employee and the local politicians??? One night, Reyna decides to leave the palace and take up Kianthe's offer. I'd like to thank Rebecca Thorne for providing an ARC of Can't Spell Treason without Tea in exchange for an unbiased review. But it didn't work for me. There also aren't that many fleshed out side characters, and the ones we spend the most time with were just bffs with our MCs from the moment they stepped foot into town. They both have a lot of anxieties due to their upbringings and positions but they work through their issues with proper communication, and I adored that aspect of the story. It is not enough to have your characters sometimes be in a setting that would be described as cozy, the story should make your readers feel cozy.
All in all, I still mostly enjoyed this, and anyone looking for a cozy fantasy with a little bit more plot/stakes probably will as well. It was really the PDA that icked me out in this book. So to sum it all up: definitely not a cozy fantasy, the non-cozy plot doesn't even go anywhere in the nearly 400 pages, the characters are boring, and the worldbuilding is lazy (all in my opinion, of course). The book balanced cosiness and adventure well, with stakes high enough to avoid falling into repetition or boredom but not so high they take away the cosy part. But this is a fantasy novel. I would absolutely recommend this story! Reyna is a palace guard under the ruthless Queen Tilaine who runs away with her powerful mage girlfriend Kianthe. Personally, I went into this wanting to read a cozy fantasy about a lesbian couple setting up a book & teashop, so I would have preferred more of an emphasis of that and less of the queen/ dragon eggs sub-plots, and perhaps a slightly shorter condensed story overall. Kianthe the Arcandor was by far my fave character and I loved seeing her and Reyna live out their dream. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in this series. I also love the elemental magic vs alchemy dichotomy and the way dragon magic is described. Or while languishing in your sickbed, feverish and vomiting?? SO DELIGHTFUL THOUGH!

Although I wish Gossley had been developed a bit more for having a purpose beyond, seemingly, only existing to make Reyna look like a better and more empathetic person, I enjoyed the dynamic between him and Reyna nonetheless in between Kianthe and Reyna's never-ending banter. That's cozy, right?? The issue I have with this book is that it didn't feel like cozy fantasy. Pleased as bunch to see book two coming soon too!!
