No doubt the 40 days Moses spent on Mount Sinai created a lasting impression; but it is more likely that the 40 years Moses spent in the wilderness (leading the obstinate nation of Israel) had a transforming effect upon his life. Was Jesus "empowered" by 40 days in the wilderness, as Warren states? Standing behind the same hand-carved pulpit made by a church member the first year of Saddleback's existence, Warren closed out his 43 years of service by saying he's preached 6, 500 sermons and studies in those four decades.
