Are the carrier bearing mounts different for a 1/2 ton than a 3/4 ton? I can say that in the GTO world i ran alot of different 1 piece shafts and the HE 2 piece was the best by far, thats why we started selling them.
You will need to swap the rear u-joint section with one from the front of the shaft. To replace that center carrier bearing assembly, however, 2-piece shafts are cheap, and you may even be able to find the front shaft... Lots of GT people who have. The two smaller-diameter units, beyond fitting much easier into limited space areas like X-members and driveshaft tunnels, also run much smoother than their larger-diameter counterparts. Did Dodge switch over to a 2-piece driveshaft for even the regular cab trucks in '96? I assume the 3 speed output is a different spline than the T85. Personally, I would run a 1 pc shaft in my I could (no go due to lenght tho).
If you need to, improvise a spark shield out of cardboard or some other suitable material to place between where you are grinding and the gas tank. My reasoning is that you have less parts, & less ANGLES to play with(less headache to setup) If the truck is "layin rail", you might be better off with a 2 pc (for clearance through the crossmember). It is determined by vehicle top speed capability, shaft material, tire size, rear axle ratio, overall system resonances - and the availability of pre-existing parts. The one i am looking at is a 1 pc 4in aluminum. Note: If you get a drive shaft from a 4×4 with the aluminum drive shaft, it will have a larger transfer case flange and you will either need to swap in a smaller u-joint unit from the rear of the shaft (the exact opposite of what you need to do in the 1983-1989 note) or swap the flange on the transfer case. Piece shaft is only 38 pounds. However, it is impossible to completely remove the vibration because the front and back of the 2-piece drive shaft will never be in phase with each other. Not sure about the years, but I know this: 2500 Auto - D70. What dodge should have done is run a torque tube tying the transmission and rear housing together.
