In this unusual not too distant future there is a mysterious technology run by a company called Death Cast which can predict death with 100% accuracy. It was still a good read and loved the message it was trying to relay. They both join an app called "Last Friend" and spend their last day together trying to live a whole lifetime. The First to Die at the End takes readers back into an earlier version of that world. From the beginning, Rufus is openly bisexual and proud of it. They both die at the end genre. It spoke in volumes about life and unavoidable situations. I HATED those side character POVs.
Up to this point in the book I wasn't sure if it was going to be a romance. That being said, the diversity and concept were not enough for me to enjoy the book and ignore its flaws. But ultimately, their time is running out, and they can't run forever. YA literature is experiencing a renaissance. Throughout the novel, there are maybe 10 people additionally to Mateo and Rufus that get at least one chapter in regards to if they are dying or not today. There are so many minute details about how society would be changed if we all knew we were going to die that I really appreciated seeing. There are whole businesses that exist for people who are living their last day, which is kind of weird to think about, but would definitely happen if we knew what day everyone was going to die. Even though you know exactly how it will end you still feel unprepared. The way his anxiety manifests is very unique, unlike other fictional characters I've read before, and I enjoyed seeing him conquer his fears and gain control over his intrusive thoughts. I guess this could be a spoilery paragraph, although I don't think so considering everything, but just in case: One of the completely weird things about reading this book is that you know the ending. Rufus and Mateo were predictable tropes, and their didactic conversations lacked chemistry. But it's also so full of hope and value and love.
Alano has not had an easy life because Death-Cast is a secret, and people want to know how it works. He was, to put it mildly, the epitome of goodness but had a hard time connecting with Rufus. I expected this book to wreck me, and it did, but not in the ways that I expected. They both die at the end gay tony. He has a serious heart condition, and he signed up for Death-Cast so he could know what's coming. 4 stars- Loved a lot but something was missing. The author managed to put me right there with them and I felt every emotion that they felt. Like how I stopped being someone afraid of the world and the people in it.
ReadJanuary 12, 2022. Live a little, live a lot. I really loved both of our main characters. Twenty four hours to grow out of phases and mindsets before you could learn what to stand up for. Despite his own fears and regrets, though, he's solidly determined to make this last day of Mateo's life meaningful, even though they only met today. They get to know each other in a way not many people are able to. That's pretty much all I have to say lol. Also, how would you spend those precious final hours? I would recommend this to anyone who has a heart and wants to read about what it means to LIVE. Long before he learned to cherish reading, Silvera was writing his own stories. All told this was a great book that no doubt, will leave its mark.
