"A thing is true" means: it is known and knowable, known to the absolute spirit, knowable to the spirit that is not absolute. But of course much depends on just what one means by "leisure", and among the many wonderful things about this book is its excavation of an older, nearly forgotten sense of the word that has deep roots in our history. Leisure is the contrary of both. "Temple" means... that a particular piece of ground is specially reserved, and marked off from the remainder of the land which is used either for agriculture or habitation... A life well-lived is one that pursues meaning, and work is one of the primary ways we pursue meaning in life. The liberal arts receive an honorarium, while servile wo rk receives a wage. Align your work to that. We of this generation do not have to face a task such as that our fathers faced, but we have our tasks, and woe to us if we fail to perform them! Hence the drift of whole academic departments into advocacy. If you are unfulfilled in your career, that is a real problem. Work alone cannot define us; it cannot be the source of our happiness; it cannot be the basis of a Christian culture.
We must direct our focus to God, to worship for His sake alone, and the rest will fall in line. Biological carrying capacity: The amount of use an area can withstand without being destroyed. One is able to apprehend the world, to encounter parts of reality that we often miss in our daily toil. On them will lie the burden of any loss of our soldiers and sailors, of any dishonor to the flag; and upon you and the people of this country will lie the blame if you do not repudiate, in no unmistakable way, what these men have done. The world is anxious for this affirmation. True leisure is an activity and an activity in which a person finds their greatest fulfillment. Even in the best of times, it is a grind.

So, to understand Pieper's argument we must define leisure, and as it turns out, leisure is a tricky word. Leisure is confident; we can say with God, "It is good. You simply sit the rest of your life, in a fog of pleasure, doing nothing for anyone. We must make the positive case for leisure. Are they worthy of sacrifice? We must strive for honesty in office, for honesty toward the creditors of the nation and of the individual; for the widest freedom of individual initiative where possible, and for the wisest control of individual initiative where it is hostile to the welfare of the many.
