By comparison with these stories, Weiss' characters were their equal in their veracity, but I was disappointed that they didn't progress much through their moral choices in life. But when a stranger sweeps in and knocks the world off-kilter for everyone in town, Sadie begins to think there might be more to life than being Roy's wife. Her daddy, Otis Blue, has passed on, but continues to give advice to Sadie on saving herself from Roy's temper. It's often used as a more conditional action statement than in comparison to another well knowns saying, come hell or high water.
If The Creek Don't Rise is a real reading pleasure filled with real reading magic. Miss Loretta is a miracle to me. Again, these aren't necessarily cliches. It ain't just Cali my friend. Which is exactly what Leah Weiss does in 'If The Creek Don't Rise'. I simply couldn't wrap my head around how a town could get so stuck in time. Make sure all your words count. I'll get to those later.
I don't believe this author could have written a more successful novel. I just wish Sadie would have been tougher from the first time that horrible husband of hers acted up. Preacher Eli Perkins with his caring and kind ways acts just as I think a man of the cloth would in similar circumstances. I liked that the chapters were told from different character's points-of-view as well, and I liked their back stories & insight into their thoughts. Each chapter presents a new character's point of view that basically continues where the last left off. Even today, and somewhat regionally, don't is used in place of the proper doesn't in dialect, but in every region it evidences a hick/hayseed/redneck-type of speaker. They would tend to cross a waterway, filled with water or not, so they would not be caught on the wrong side if it rained where they were or if it rained upstream of them and the water rose.
