This is perhaps the book that has most divided myself and my boyfriend. I really do like local settings, but have only just stumbled across some Aussie authors so I'm happy about that. When he was five we got a call from the state to let us know we had been selected for a home study as they now were allowing white couples to adopt mixed race children. It could have been written in a much better way, but it fell flat and was more insulting than interesting. Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. Along comes Emily, the wayward daughter of an old friend, whom Paul hires to be his assistant, and she's a sparkling force determined to prove her worth with the one chance she's been given. I couldn't stop reading this book which although sad is never mawkish.
