It really was the clubhouse for all the bands that were coming up in that era. Downstairs, Stoker was manning the packed bar. Back in the days of punk, none of us were saying that. ORIGINALITY (to me) WAS PRIME, TECHNIQUE TOOK SECOND PLACE. It was here that the New York Dolls performed twice a week regularly at the Oscar Wilde Room of the Mercer Arts Center. This "banned for life" thing was a threat Harold would make every so often to a misbehaving band or audience member. Though the sound's a bit thin (a remastered version with heavier bass antics would hit the spot just nice), it also contains some of their best songs, such as the closing "An Observation: The Eye at the Top of the Pyramid, " a lumbering rock drone that hitches the ride like the best of Hawkwind ca. Its site had been the location of the derelict Palace Bar, in what was, in truth, a pretty run-down part of the Village. What initially started out with garage bands steadily grew into an underground movement. Ramones even played their first shows at CBGB, arguably starting the notion of punk as we know it with three chords and little hope of success. By 1976, the Bowery nightspot already had such a reputation that it fostered an Atlantic Records compilation. The band influenced all sorts of punk and punk-adjacent bands from Nirvana to the Melvins and Falcone's guitar work continues to be a definitive and singular element of the band's sound. Following 1990's Blue Star LP on RRR, a part live/part studio gem that basically continued on the well-worn/well-loved vein of Space Mantra, things got a bit sticky in the F/i camp.
